Are you all able to cover a broad range of ideas for system design interviews? I have the ebook - Grokking the System design interview and the topics they cover are in great detail. But are we supposed to cover to that extent in system design interviews at Google and Facebook? How high is the bar for these interviews at these companies compared to others?
I just had my interview at google and it was an amazing experience. I didn't use any book to prepare rather I went with my experience. The questions that were asked were quite detailed and tests for the experience rather then the book knowledge. Although one of the interview was just on the concepts where brushing your skills through a book will help but the other 4 interviews were all experience based. Let me know if you have any specific questions.
Damn grokking the system design is not at all good for the experienced interviews
Is Grokking enough for system design interviews for people with 2 yoe?
Yeah, but system design primer may be better
Honestly, I found it too heavy to read . Do you require a lot of hands on experience to understand or would you recommend to read any other material before this book?
Do u know a good solution of building system to give top 10 tag for twitter at twitter scale?

What's an example of great detail you find in Grokking? I was under the impression that the Grokking course provides a high level overview, rather than anything in detail. Is the book more detailed? I have been able to answer interview questions only from Kleppman's book.
I agree that its not a real world design document. But the system block diagrams that they have for newsfeed design or web crawler design are in good amount of detail. I am not sure if we are supposed to have that much coverage in interviews. Also, the traffic estimation part is also in good detail.
I've needed significantly more detail than those diagrams, in my interviews. Those show you what is the first thing you draw on the whiteboard, not what you do for the remaining 40 minutes.
