Currently a technical PM in a Canadian bank and wondering if It’s financially wise to make a move to management consulting like Bain or BCG.

TC: 150$
YOE: 8+

Also thought of moving to FAANG as a PM, but my coding skills sucks and I don’t know if I will ever make it.

@BCG rightly said. People have such stereotypes about consulting that people work 16 hrs a day , no weekends etc which is not really true . Sure some weeks are heavy but that is not the case mostly. Also if you stay in consulting for 8yrs plus and perform above average you are almost guaranteed to make partner whereas in tech there is no guarantee that you will make VP or director.

I wouldn’t do it, terrible WLB and the standard of the work really sucks. Pay isn’t great either. If you hop to other banks you should be able to improve your TC, there are also other tech companies that can pay better and are not FANG if you want to work in this environment. Have you tried Microsoft?

Thanks for the advice! I looked up Microsoft Jd before and it seems like they’re looking for people with past SWE experience. Most banks have fixed bands. Tried hop to other banks and the TC is pretty much the same. Will keep looking!

Can you gain SWE experience by working on side projects or through volunteering? It’s an investment in your career with high ROI.

I have a different pov as a former mgmt consultant and current pm leader. Do it for 2 years and then go back into PM, you will be much stronger and grow faster than your peers for big tech roles with combination of technical experience and ability to influence executives

Thanks for the advice! How did you manage to get technical experience in consulting? What’s your take on coding/ dev skills for PM role in Uber? I heard one big difference for bigTech PM is they require some Dev experience. Is it true?

No, Dev experience not required. If you’ve already been technical PM you probably will be more technical than many of your peers. I didn’t get technical experience in consulting, but I did get top tier strategy, leadership, execution, comms, which are all key pm competencies

Can confirm - WLB is terrible. I got a lot of fantastic tech experience - but have had 0 WLB. Stay in tech and move up to FAANG.

Currently trying to escape consulting and it’s tough

Just curious. WLB in tech is better but isn't the long term career growth and pay better in consulting. As far as I have heard , in any career that pays tons of money , wlb will take a hit. Whether it is consulting/private equity / hedge fund /ib.

So, you get promoted faster in consulting but the WLB stays bad. Like at a big four you top out at a $1M or less at Partner but your still working insane hours. At Accenture the first year MD salary is in the 250 range which big tech blows out of the water even for a senior product role. You can hit Director level in tech, have a personal life, and make the same money if not more.

No, software pays more than services firms. And easier for you to try and transition to BigTech than to break into MBB.
