I joined Amazon for about a year. Yesterday I received an email after 1:1 with my manager. In the email, there were two LPs that my manager said I need to improve. With some examples of what I did not do well. I am speechless that some stuff can be said with positive feedback previously, but now using some other LPs, it can be said with negative feedback.

I am on H1B and visa actually worries me as well.

My questions are:
1. does this mean I am, or I am about to be on focus plan?
2. Is it possible to be PIP without being on focus plan first?
3.If I am put on focus plan, should I try to work through it? how do I know if this is just an excuse to PIP me or this is some feasible improvement project?
4. I asked my manager if I am on focus plan but received no reply. I think this speak some truth. Although he could be too busy to reply me.

Thank you!

  • 1. Very likely.
    2. No, first it's focus then PIP.
    3. No, LC and move out for your own mental health. Apply FMLA two weeks before PIP deadline.
    4. Never trust an Amazon manager.

  • It's standard Focus entry mail and marks start of Focus. It would be about 1-2 months followed by PIP.

Plan the PTO / FMLA/ interview prep and leave.

Here is what I know after being there for 8 yrs:
    1. Not necessarily. Your boss gets to decide that. But this could be ammo for the future to put you on a pip. To protect themselves legally, they have to show they warned you first and then put you on a pip to give you a chance to improve and then fore you if needed. I know cause I was a manager for 8 yrs!

    2. Yes

    3. Focus is lighter version of PIP. It means your manager wants you to improve rather than fire you. However if you donโ€™t do well when they do put you on a focus then it will convert to PIP.

    4. I explained above

Sorry to hear. I know what that feels like and especially on a H1B.

You should start getting better if your skill level allows and at the same time look outside the company.

Explained everything except the facts about URA and that there is no process behind focus and pip. If your manager dislikes you, you are fcked at this step, no option to challenge !

  • Never trust (any) manager. Your manager intended to say that โ€œI am going to kick you out of Amazonโ€ - this statement is hidden in the 2 LPs that he mentioned.

Take a deep breath, start preparing and head out. Good luck ๐Ÿ‘

"Focus" is a necessary prerequisite to PIP. Whether you like it or not, you are now on the path to PIP. Either make your manager happy, or prepare to leave. If you leave before being officially put on PIP, you won't be blackballed as URA/no-hire.

Even if you leave on Focus, you are marked URA. I have even seen people on HV1 rating (one step above PIP, but assigned to 40% at least) be marked URA upon leaving as they were 'trending' downwards
