I am currently a Cloud Support Engineer (glorified call center job) at AWS and looking for a change internal or external. Came across a few open reqs at GCP. How is the TAM interview process there? I would also be interested in TSE position there but the only issue is I am not very good at scripting or OOP. I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks. PS: Would love to get any referrals or leads in PDX area. #gcp #azure TC: 90k
Is cloud support really just a call center? My experience with support folks is they are extremely technical in their area of work and can handle huge workloads and have a pretty good foundation of knowledge for topics outside of their direct scope. Is AWS support not this way?
They are pretty good engineers and the work they do is equivalent to an Enterprise Sys Engineer . But the work environment is becoming more like a call center with increasing demand. And the management does not want to address that issue. Or if they are trying to address it, they are not doing a good job.
OP is really making a joke of sorts. Azure and GCP support is not real different in terms of supporting ops and being enterprise support for customers. It would be remiss if OP actually thinks MS or G would be any different for CSEs.
The TAM role at Google (currently one) recently changed so OKR (objectives and key results) are being updated. E.g. roles/responsibilities are slightly shifting due to the introduction of CSMs who have quota to increase ramp (e.g. cloud consumption). The interview process will involve GCA (Google Cognitive Ability), RRK (role related knowledge) and a Googlyness (think collaboration, dealing with ambiguity) interview. Is it tough? I don't think so for most, but it will depend on what level you interview for. The TAM role is terminal at L6, just so you know, and the interview for that is tough, from a technical skillset standpoint. AWS TAMs (also former one) are the most technical of the bunch. Microsoft TAMs (haven't been one but know many) are a bunch of college kids who were hired because of some diversity BS. Google doesn't do diversity hires, and I'm proud of that. I know that's a shocking thing to say, but it's in our interview training guide.
Thanks @ordV48. This is very helpful.
Hey @ordV48, quick questions please 1) what is the TAM RRK like? Is it the same as the case study or they include it as part of the interview questions? 2) I remember that I once interviewed for the TAM role sometimes in 2017 and I had to do a presentation with slides. Is that still the process 3) You mentioned that the L6 is tough from technical skillset standpoint. Do you mind shedding light on this? Is the technical more of cloud/GCP related or it is more of a PM/relationship mgmt?

You can also go the route of associate solutions architect to get your feet wet in SA role if you want to look for an internal AWS transfer. Tons of CSEs have done that route.
Yeah. I've been thinking about that option as well. Is it a good idea to move to SA as an L4 though?
Well the associate level SA is a L4. Its a lateral move.
