Is it solely because people hate GMO? Or are there other reasons like lobbying and monopoly? what if I'd love to mess with genetic engineering, are there any other good companies to join other than Monsanto?
They use Africa as a testing ground for GMO seeds because they think nobody will notice / care when it destroys the land and the gov't corruption provides an easy in with minimal cash. And it *has* destroyed parts of the land while they were tweaking and testing various modifications, leaving behind unusable land for farmers.
California finally said their roundup causes cancer.
Everything causes cancer in in California.
If you are interested in genetics, there are literally thousands of other biotech companies you could work for that are less evil than Monsanto. Try searching for "biotech" in TechCrunch, or Google for that matter.
Read about what Monsanto did to Indian farmers, it's the epitome of an evil corporation

I'm in Tech because my dad wouldn't let me stay home and farm. He saw the monoculture thing coming years ahead. I have family that lost their farm to Monsanto because of cross-pollination lawsuits that they lost. I'm sure there are good, well-meaning people there and at others, but I mostly think violent thoughts when it comes to the companies themselves.
Terminator seeds.
Because they sue farmers who refuse to pay licensing fee after their crops were unintentionally pollenated with Monsanto's GMO strains. Because they promote monoculture instead of crop rotation. Because they used to produce Agent Orange during the war with Vietnam. There are many more reasons.
Yeah, don't confuse Monsanto and GMO. Monsanto is the epitome of shitty big businesses that push everyone around.
They have a fair share of innovation too under their belt.
