L6 Sr Pgm Mgr Interview Loop at Amazon / AWS Tuesday, wish me luck & give me tips!

Jul 20, 2020 13 Comments

I went to the information session to get tips on interviewing, but any tips you can share would definitely be appreciated. From what I can tell it's non-tech, so nobody's going to be asking me to whiteboard anything (or so I hope). The first round interviewer said they were targeting L6.

I've pored over my last 15 years worth of resumes to pull out the biggest global projects I've worked on, and am writing up STAR format stories so I have a good arsenal to pull from. I have the leadership principles printed off to keep up on the wall when I interview.

I'm super nervous about this because I need a job and have a lot riding on this.

If you don't mind sharing opinions on TC expectations for L6 that'd be great too. I have a feeling it'd be a big bump up from my hourly contractor comp.

So, I finished the loop today, 5 interviews. The first was the hiring manager, and I really feel like they set it up for success by having me talk to him first, he was awesome! Then two senior program managers on the same team, a program mgr who was on the team in the past, last a tech account manager with a finance ops person mentoring him on interviewing. The first four interviews went excellent, tons of situational questions, that luckily I had answers for. Last interview shook me a little though, they asked 3 questions about failures I'd experienced, so I felt bad because that was uncomfortable and I had to think really hard to frame the stories without being negative. All in all, I'd be surprised if they don't offer me the job, but that last interview gives me pause. I'll update when I hear back.

LPs LPs LPs. I interviewed for L4, but something that helped me a lot is being super self-reflective in the follow-up questions. If they asked something like “What was your feedback like?”, I would try to give 1 positive thing and 1 thing I learned. I think that when interviewees face this kind of pressure, they try to only give positive things, which comes across as inauthentic. Try to anticipate the types of follow-up questions you’ll be asked and practice several questions with someone you know. Best of luck!

Usually LP-specific. For example, for “Bias for action” you might be asked to share a time you took initiative. You might tell a story that’s better geared toward “Think big,” but the interviewer will ask questions to drill down specifically into the LP they’re assigned. They might even pivot LPs for some spice

      Thanks for that.

I was asking about the next set of probing questions (e.g. what would you have done differently? What was the result of that? Etc).

Which of those probing questions were asked more than the others?

I didn't get it. I am absolutely beside myself and don't know what to say. I'm honestly shocked.
