I see a lot of TC posted here $300k+, and people saying they save ~$200k a year. Are you all engineers? Are there other professions that can earn that much? I have 15 years of experience, employed as a project manager, and i thought i was doing well with TC 180k

I had same question. 12 YOE, 2 masters degree from USA, TC:130k. Often seeing these blind posts, I ask myself am I that underpaid? Who are you $300k people?

Actually 300k for seniors is low, the new trend is 350k+

sure bring up outliers making this level of money the reality is very few people can become portfolio managers and fewer are successful enough to make a million. you can’t compare the top .1% of people in finance to the top 10% of tech and get a fair comparison

It’s not easier for most people to make 300k in tech. Most tech people don’t make even close to this. I think in finance you can make the same money in tech having lower IQ. If you make 500k in tech, I bet you’d make double in finance

    • Wow. I got out of design bc I wasn’t able to pull over $100 back in 2010. That’s crazy. I must be doing something wrong

I think they might be including stock appreciation in their numbers. My TC was 300k last year and I saved 122k plus a 27% rate of return. I consider myself fairly aggressive and think saving 200k with no appreciation would really require a 400-500k salary when you take taxes into account (assuming you live in California).

Stock market went up around 30% in 2019. So if you bought a stock index fund like VTSAX, you will get a 27% rate of return on the 122k one would invest in VTSAX. I got similar returns in 2019 but one can also lose 27% in 2020.

  • How is their TC 300k and after taxes (fed tax rate is 35%) their take home is 195k, without state taken into consideration...how could they save 200k+ a year? They have monthly expenses so if someone is claiming what you stated above I’d feel like they are exaggerating.

I imagine (assumed) he meant he sees those types of posts on blind, not necessarily the same people/posts ie. Some people say they have 300TC and other people say they have 200 savings. Not necessarily someone has 300 TC and 200 savings. Because yes that’s unreasonable and clearly not true

  • Ok. So I guess I’m going back to school for engineering. I dunno why ya’ll say it’s stressful. You don’t even have to talk to people all day. And you can use all that money for a therapist or a serious drinking habit.

Honestly, the number of assignments per week, and having the pressure around a structured learning system for 4 years will be suffocating, IMO! Finished 2nd masters last year and I have lost the ‘pedagogical me’! I’d rather enjoyed many mock sessions, coming across new learning resources that helps in my current job, accidentally. Free-form learning is way better!! $$$ is not a necessity for a happy fulfilling life!
