PhD + 2.5 yoe in a semiconductor company as an analog integrated circuit design engineer. Thinking of transition to hardware engineer role in Google or Facebook for a better TC. What is the typical TC in Google or Facebook? Any other thought about hardware groups there? Got L3 offer from Apple as new grad before, so I know apple’s package and culture.
Wow. That's a new perspective that I haven't thought about. I have already interviewed and awaiting result. Google is hiring like crazy so do you think it will change in the future when more resources are available. Of course no company will invest as much as Apple on the phone
Is google HW travel as much as Apple, like to 20%?
Hey OP you can check my reply in the last comment.
Is Google serious about developing hardware?
They have hired a bunch of people from Intel as well
And Qualcomm
But mostly Apple
Bottom line is you will be working at cutting edge stuff at Google. Even if there hardware doesn't see the light of day I don't think it would be a problem finding a job after work ex at Google. Now if you are moving from Apple I may think twice about that but for people coming from smaller companies it's still a good opportunity
Agree with you.
What is your current TC?
Well the pay isn't great. Just do software salaries minus 1. So hardware L5 gets software L4 sand so on

Worried that our top performer is an attrition risk. How do managers handle this?
Google HWPA is just yet another Apple, culture wise. The only difference is you get underpaid and it's a startup and the phone we made is just crappy. Almost everyone I know around me used to work in Apple. they thought Google has better WLB and culture. So they came here even if their package doesn't even at the same level. It turned out that here is tiring because we don't know how to do the product. Wanna be the next who looks for something that doesn't exist?Think about it.
Thanks, was wondering about this. A manager from our team at Apple went over to google and took a bunch of people. Some of them cited WLB as the reason. But if everyone’s from Apple it sounds like it’s just an Apple copycat, or will become one soon.
