I'm at the salary negotiation part for a Sr. Software Engineer role at Capital One NYC and would like to know how much can I ask for as TC. What's the approximate range for this role?
What's your YOE? You might want to shoot for principal instead, which is the next level (check levels.fyi) That one caps out around 160k for McLean/DC area, which is the main headquarters
Depends on what they call “senior”. A “Principle Associate” has an external title of Senior Software Engineer. There’s also a “Senior Associate”, but no clue what it’s called in the offer letters. In any case, PA level can get up to $20k signing bonus, the base pay tops at around $155k, and you’ll have a target bonus of just over $9k. If you get the best review possible, the bonus can go up to $19k. They won’t offer the top of the pay band, however, so I’d expect no more than $145-ish base. If it’s actually at SA level, then I’d expect 10-15k lower, just estimating. This was my experience for a PA level in NYC.
That was a really good explanation, thanks a lot for that! The recruiter mentioned $150K base plus sign up and performance bonuses, but I didn't know how much to expect for those. I'm gonna try to negotiate the max sign up and assuming a good performance, according to your numbers I should be able to get between $180K and $190K by the end of my first year. I actually had a target of $180K - $200K in mind, so that'd do it.
The yearly bonus is a fixed range based on your perf review. It’s 100% stack ranking and don’t let them fool you otherwise. They weren’t honest with me about the review structure in my recruitment. It would have changed my mind. Your bonus, if you join now, will be prorated between now and the end of the year and will be in the neighborhood of $2k-3k for this year. You won’t be eligible for a full bonus until the next performance year, starting in Jan, and then, unless you kill it, will be a little over $9k before taxes. If you rank below a middle rating, the bonus will be lower, same for higher ranking. You’ll be a long ways from your $180k+ target. There are other benefits, though. Very generous 401k match and FSA matching, which they’ll use to sound like they are padding out your offer, but the 401k match takes 2 years to vest.
Trash company. Stay away
OP, did you end up joining? What was the final offer you got?
