TC obsessed friend

Feb 13 41 Comments

I’ve had this friend for almost 10 years, been in same high school & college, we have fun together and share lots of personal secrets with each other, Ive put all my trust in him. Now we both get decent jobs out of school -!: work for a few years. (hes at another company tho)

But now he seems to turn into someone else, hes extremely obsessed with TC, almost every recent conversation between us is about he heard “another friend” got ***K TC from company ABC, someone just got a promotion, he wants to increase TC by **% in next year, etc.

I’m feeling a little uncomfortable or even sick of hearing those topics constantly, and I feel like our values are two worlds apart now, and those conversation also make me feel extremely stressful and unhealthy.

This person seems no longer to be the person I used to know. Should I just cut tie with him? But I know him for many years and been good buddies til now. Is he being toxicized and brainwashed by bay area environment? Or is it normal during the process called “grow up”?

Im still quite young and wanna hear your guys’ thoughts.

A lot of people in the Bay Area are like that. The Bay Area “turns” them into tc hungry vampires. My friends from other states have never talked about tc.

I once saw tech dudes at a night club in the Bay Area talking about tc while girls were dancing alone..... you really cant make this shit up.

LOL... 250k 3yoe is mediocre? Sounds like you’re not that different from your friend after all! That’s either a fucking humblebrag or you’re perception of TC is delusional... either way, maybe do some self reflection instead of asking Blind for friendship advice

Sounds like a top-class Blinder to me. Only thing on their mind is money, low EQ, zero social skills and can’t talk about anything else.

      OP
It’s not about one topic during one conversation, it’s more about our values start to differ so much, and he’s putting tons of peer pressure on me.

Ok. Then drift off I guess. I don’t mean to say this callously, but I have been enough for sometime to know that I don’t want to make my life miserable for the folks around me. I prefer to hang out with folks I enjoy spending time with

Don’t judge. You do not know his situation. He may need money badly for personal reasons that you do not know and you do not have that need.

Totally agree on this! He also might be more ambitious to make more money for himself to lead a good life. He might have specific goals which need a certain amount of money to achieve. It could be a myriad of reasons. You should commend him and encourage him to pursue the money to enable him to get to his goals.

250 is low for the Bay Area. Where are you located?

Bay area. It's plenty enough for me. I save 50% of my base pay in cash even after maxing 401k, HSA etc. I just need 250k or more in annual tc to be able to fire in a few years. I invest more than 3k a month into ETFs. I have no plans of buying a house. I just want to be able to invest 5k s month into the stock market for the next 10 years or so.
