Hi folks,

I recently got an offer from Google for TVC Program Manager position. The rates are $100/hr and 6 months contract with the possible extensions. I’ve heard that it’s almost impossible to be converted to FTE at Google and you are not considered as “googler”.

I am currently a product manager at AT&T and also a contractor with the rates of $65/hr. I am almost certain that I will be converted to FTE in May. However, I’ve heard that I get paid less when I get converted at AT&T.

Should I take this G offer despite the fact that it is a TVC and program manager role (I like being a product manager better)? Do you think being a contractor at Google will be more valuable to get into FAANG in the future or should I stay and prepare the PM interviews and shoot for the better offer with higher TC?

Thank you in advance!

TL;DR:

Current - AT&T contractor as a product manager with high chance of conversion in May. (TC: 135K with 2 yoe)

Offer - Google 6 months contractor as a program
manager (TC: 200K)

Should I take this offer or wait so that I can shoot for FTE FAANG interview? Please let me know why which one is better. Thanks!

What you heard about TVC conversion to FTE is not correct. Infact its easier to convert because you'll have access to more resources and people to guide.

Thank you for the comment. How likely is it to have extensions? I’m honestly scared since it’s only 6-month contract initially.

Extensions happen. I know some TVCs contracted by another company, and they've had multiple extensions. That said, every situation is different. Our org decided last year not to have any TVCs, so none of them got extended.

I’m a TVC at Google and am going on 3 years as PM. Another person on my team is also a TVC and going on 4 years. My initial contract was for 13 months and I have received yearly extension. My team is fantastic and caring about the individual. My WLB has been the best I’ve ever had. Also, congrats on your pay - that is fantastic. I’ve been told as long as your team is doing good, contracts get extended.

I always get a little nervous around renewal time, but my person at Google said they’d give a several months notice if it won’t be renewed in order to find another job. My team did get some headcount approved for the first time in five years and I would love to convert, but I’m not getting my hopes up.

Do you know if you’d be classified as a vendor, temp or contractor? I believe temps have to take a break every 18 months.

Can you share where you're located and how many years of experience you have? I'm a TVC in Chicago but make much less. Thanks!

I’m in the Seattle area and work in a fairly specialized field with an in-demand certification. My salary listed is +\- 5k for anonymity. I have roughly 15 years experience.
