Recruiter reached out saying i’d be a good fit for
product Technical Program Manager role at FB. How is this org? Is it similar to Product Management? Seems like the role is not very technical.

About me- Currently an EM at McKinsey. Bay Area based. Most of my clients are tech companies, and have worked on some tech transformation engagements and tons of internal McK product development work. Looking to build more and advise less. Don’t see myself becoming a partner.

Would love to hear from ex consultants who are in Facebook if this would be a good fit and if Product TPM is a solid team.

  • It’s just TPMing that’s in the product org. Nothing wrong with it and could be a competitive offer, but it’s not product

    • @mckinsey no, I’m in a weird pseudo role. But I work daily and weekly with PMs and TPMs.

Good teams have many definitions. Are you looking for growth, wlb, interesting work? Usually 2/3 is a good team. Rule of thumb, if you’re coming in as a generalist, look for good pulse scores on wlb, ask the teammates not just manager, and look for an org that will be growing.

I am a M2 TPM at Facebook. Been in the company for 5+ yrs.

Regarding the role- PM is more strategic, TPM is more execution focused. The Product TPM role has evolved quite a lot over 2 yrs and its def more strategic now but on internal facing tech products. Eg- you will rarely liaise with marketing (PMM) and sales team to drive strategic initiatives to evaluate product market fit/ grow the product in other markets.

Regarding pay and career growth-The pay gap between PM and TPM has reduced considerably in last 2 years. Its much easier to get EE and above ratings for TPM v/s PM, so typically I’ve noticed TPM TC to be similar and in many cases (atleast in my org) higher than the PMs we work with. IC4->IC6 is much easier at TPM compared to PM. And we have 25% IC7 and above TPMs in Product TPM org.

I am ex Bain Senior Manager. Now an M1 Product TPM at Facebook. Highly recommend it! The role is very influential, pay is great compared to business (PMMs, Program Manager) roles.

IC3 TC would be around 130k. Yeah pretty good growth- I know many IC3s who made it to IC5 in 2 years.

Yaa it might be a drop in level and prestige but def a pay bump

      And it's not product management
You'd be a glorified project manager

It's a relatively good entry point into tech. Once you become a TPM, p&l roles will be a lot tougher to get. People stereotype you into tpm/pm roles. Something to keep in mind

Consultants typically don't have the technical skills for TPMs I think?

Agreed, it’s mostly building slides and pitch decks. Btw nothing wrong with it but tech at google and Facebook is very in depth.

Tpm would be about how technical you seem. Doing transformations and stuff is very businesslike where as google and Facebook are mostly engineer tech companies.

I realize you are doing tech transformations but it’s still much different then being in the weeds. At these companies you will be in the weeds a lot
