I am an Engineering Manager (EM) at a big, but traditional, company in Brazil, currently managing a team of 8 developers, and I am now at the initial stages of interviewing at Booking (Amsterdam), Google (San Francisco) and Twitter (No info yet).

Also, I met a CTO, who was previously an Sr EM at a very successful scaleup in Brazil, that is starting a new fintech startup with two other guys that just recently sold their company and are now being invested by https://a16z.com/ in this new venture.
What excited me about the startup is that I would be the first EM to join the company and I would be also working close to really good people.

In 5 years, I plan to launch my own startup, so right now I am prioritizing learning instead of TC. So mainly I am considering two things:
- Where I would learn the most?
- Which company would bring me closer to launch my own startup in the future?

One of the things that also made me interested at FAANG is that I get a chance to move to the US to get, not only really high TCs, but also the entrepreneurial environment and opportunities that are much better than in Brazil.

Current TC: 250k BRL
Still too early in all processes, no offers from any of those companies yet. But I will be probably having an offer to join this startup next week and I am considering starting right way before finishing the other interviews.

Given you want to do your own startup, this opportunity sounds more valuable than FAAANG. This is assuming you believe in the founders, which it seems like you do

If you need to benchmark pay, this should help: https://topstartups.io/startup-salary-equity-database/

  • If you're tilter towards having your own company few years later then would definitely recommend getting hands dirty at a startup so that you know the lows and highs of this ride
