TPM at Google

Does anyone have any tips for applying or interviewing for TPM roles at Google? What types of skills and backgrounds are sought after in TPM candidates?

Study your ass off. SRE TPM is the hardest.

A TPM at Level N is expected to be able to do the work of a SWE at level N-1, so swot up on algorithms for the coding interview.

Expected to exhibit the technical judgment of level below. Don't need to crank out code... But should expect to do algo or system design questions. That said, most successful TPMS I know are formerly SWEs and often were managers in past lives.

I recently interviewed for a tpm role at google. I’ve been managing sw engineering for a long time. I totally agree that tpms (any eng mgr) should have a solid technology background and be able to talk about issues with a Good understanding of the problems. That said, I was a little surprised when they wanted me to write code for tree search algorithms in the interview. I haven’t gotten a response (coming up on three weeks now) but don’t have high expectations.

Were you asked coding/technical questions in the phone round as well?
