Interested in impact, comp and growth opportunities for a Sr TPM role at Amazon vs Google. Clearly, company optics (brand, WLB) side with Google. However, it seems like the actual work TPMs get to do at Amazon is more substantial than at Google (on average). Is this true? What do the wise folk on Blind think? 20 yoe, 320k.
EM is very technical, with most, if not all doing design and coding at Google TPM -> EM at Amazon is a shit show from thestories I've heard. You should be really technical to be an EM.
Thanks. I’ve been a SWE and EM for most my career, so that’s not a concern. Edited post to focus more on TPM aspects at both places.
I am currently a director of engineering. I am fairly technical, can do system design and can code (maynot be able to code every single medium problem). Tried EM and SRE management interviews at google, didnt make it. Did TPM interview and had a good on-site, currently doing team match. Right now my motivation to shift to google TPM is - 1] I beleive that moving to google TPM will more than double my current salary. 2] My current team isnt doing well, and there will be huge headwinds for us next year. Next steps - 1] Continue to learn more on coding and system design. 2] Learn from google coleagues, hopefully learn more about coding and system design then i can do on my own. 3] Get a EM interview in the future (a year or two from now) and see how i do. Your thoughts? My main question is - 1] Moving away from people management to TPM type role, would it hinder my future growth into EM type roles? 2] Do i need to be a L6 to move to EM?

Why do you say TPM to EM is unlikely at google ?
Ladder transfer to SWE is possible with a round of interviews, but to EM needs one to first get to an equivalent or higher level as TPM (navigating the complex promo process).
So if I am a TPM at L5 , can’t shift to EM ?
