Posting on behalf of my wife-

My current company moved me to Canada, and she got an open work permit. Her present company moved her as well. It’s been 2 months and we realised what she’s getting paid is sub market. She looked out and got a few offers from companies. Now her current company is asking her to stay back and they’ll counter offer. Manager says he wasn’t aware of her pay and agrees it is below par. She’s with this company for 4 years now.

TC-107
New TC- 150
YOE-8
Counter offer- Matched

What do you guys think? The rapport she’s built in her current company is amazing. Directly visibility with the COO.

Thanks

I want to add on that if money is the only criteria, it might be worth exploring. BUT, remember that this raises a couple of questions.

    1. Why weren't they paying your wife what she was worth? Please don't buy this BS of oh I didn't know you were being paid below par.

    2. If you accept the counter, understand that this sets a precedent. 2 years down the line, when your wife has more experience and tries again, will she pull the same dangle the offer ploy with your current employer? If so, how will they react?

    3. If people are going to be laid off, your wife will be the first to be let go / will be asked to lower her back to her original salary.

Fwiw, I had this convo with my manager, my skip, and my skip's skip recently. I have/had excellent visibility with all of them, and I thoroughly enjoyed the culture. The skip's skip and skip said that they weren't aware. But I had a convo with my manager, and he told me that they are aware, because they are facing a difficult time hiring because everyone keeps rejecting them for companies with higher pay. And it's at a point, where now if they bring in someone at that high salary, it will start upsetting people who are already working (trust me word gets around - especially with the new grads/early professional hires, us folk can't keep our mouth shut)

I decided to take something new, because i have only 2 yoe. The risk is worth the new experience gained. But please, think of the above carefully. Accepting a counter seems rosy as you might have gotten them to cave, but its a lot deeper than that.

Sometimes in our mind we will value comfort and/or money. Either two extremes. We will forget the in between.

In between is important because it will fuck you in the longer run if you’re not careful.

Companies don’t care about anyone apart from themselves. It’s upto you to take care of yourself

  • This might be one of the rare circumstances where staying makes sense. If literally the only thing wrong is money and they can fix the money, staying makes sense.

  • Tell the company that gave her an offer that current employer matched it with a counter. See if they will give more. If they do try to get a new counter offer from current employer. If they match - stay, if not go with new company.

Ok so their is an update. The current company is asking her to share her offer, and they’ll match it. Is she obligated to share the offer letter?
