Been at Amazon 2 years and consulting before that. I feel like I’m losing my passion for life. I’m not interested in other similar jobs at other companies, and thinking about taking some time off to do whatever I want each day, travel, etc. Has anyone taken extended time off? What did you do? What was it like coming back into the workforce?
Seconded. I've straight up quit work twice. Once for a year, once for a half a year. The first time I didn't have as much of a plan as I wanted and just chilled for a few months weathering the burnout. Then managed to travel and get some hobbies. Was a bit too frugal minded. In hindsight I could've done more. But the second time competes for the best 6 months of my life. Travelled all over, just generally did whatever the fuck I wanted, and lived life. Both times, by the end I was ready to get a job again and be productive and it's great. I'll probably make a habit out of working for a couple years - taking time off - repeat. Vacation is awesome.
How long did you work before your first break and second break?
Does the gap look bad on Resume?
In my experience, no, not if you've been at a company for a while. Didn't get a single negative response to it, most employers in tech saw it as a positive thing (you're coming in energized to work hard again)
Doing it now. Couldn’t have been more peaceful. For me 8 years after my undergrad. 2 years of Masters plus 6 years of work. I was on a visa but I still took a risk. Let’s see how it goes. But I am enjoying my life though. Just take a break and it will help you rejuvenate!
What about the gap in income? I hear everyone saying how relaxing it was. Do you not regret the lost income / unfunded cost of living?
Depend on your situation. If you are single with no kids and home it’s far easier than people think. I had kids and a home when I went on hiatus (but would have loved to do it prior as well, looking back). In either case put together your anticipated budget including worst case buffer for N months of job hunting. Lost income will never be a regret if you use the time and get the most out of it (whatever that means to you). If you are traveling and looking at extended stays, take the time to research your options around cost savings. It’s very easy to save thousands without sacrificing much convenience.

Hot take: companies don't owe you interview feedback when they reject you
I just took 6 months off after working for 10 years straight. Can't recommend it enough! Went traveling and now feel excited to get back to work. Felt similarly to you about not wanting to work in a similar field again before I quit, but now I don't feel that way anymore and I'm ready to get back into a similar job again!
Was finding a job after a gap an issue? They say it's easier to get a job when you have one already.
Wasn't an issue at all but I was in my last job for over 5 years.
