Hi guys, I forgot to put my marital status as Married on Amazon portal when first joined 2 months ago since I was new hire too busy for new hire stuff and didn't know Amzn could send out 1099 in early Jan and it's Single status. after 1st paycheck (sign on bonus and 15day salary), i realized it because I paid almost 28% tax (now 21% as joint filing) and contacted amzn tax department but they told me to contact my tax officer. Me and spouse made roughly 100k+ last year. (mostly me 100k - spouse in school and does part time job) Today, my tax officer said my tax is balanced out and either I need to pay $1k to get $3k from IRS or pay nothing to owe $2k to IRS? I always pay as I go. My spouse is in TX and I'm in Seattle. The questions are: 0. Will tax office able to change my martial status from single to married on file? 1. Will I get the 7% of tax due to single status for the 1st paycheck? (i was stupid to not fill out personal info). 2. Beside 7%, will I get any amount back? Or that $2k is the most? Thanks, Tc 180 2yoe #tax
You can easily change withholding a with a w-4. You can’t undo what is already withheld but you can withhold less the rest of the year to balance it out. Your total tax bill is the same regardless of withholding, it’s just a question of whether you get a refund if you over withheld or pay more if you didn’t withhold enough. Your pay/get numbers don’t make sense to me. The total tax will always be the same.
How can i without less for the resf of the year? Should i contact amazon? They pay/get doesnt make sense to me either. Probably the tax guy wanna get some cut?
It does not impact your green card. All it changes is how much they withhold for taxes. You get it back when you file taxes if you over paid.
0. No. Only you can change your status and you can only do it for the future. 1. Not now. You can file 2020 as married and get it back as a refund in spring 2021, if you have nothing to offset it through the rest of the year. 2. Only TurboTax or your accountant can tell you. Depending on your other income (investments), you may not have a refund.
0. That means the marital status will be single in 2019 form? (its important for me because i need it as Married to interview with USCIS for greencard. 1. How can i offset it?
Dude it doesn’t matter, seriously. No matter how much it’s taxed as or how much it’s withheld. It all goes to Box 1 on your W2. While filing use the correct way “married”’filing jointly and you will get back what you owe. This is same as when people think bonus are taxed at 40-45%. I mean wtf!! It doesn’t matter even if it’s taxed at 80%. It’s all on box 1 anyways.
You’re probably screwed for the first paycheck but just fix it going forward, not the end of the world
Yup. That means I'll lose that amout of tax i paid for nothing? 😔
Almost 3k
