I recently joined LinkedIn and continuing to work from residence in WA till company moves to stage 5 which will probably happen in 2022. My work location in workday is California and residence WA. Payroll told me that they will deduct California taxes. Does anyone know what are the implications? How can I tell them to withhold taxes according to WA till rto? In workday, i saw several folks are listed under US_Homeaddress, i suppose that is correct classification. #linkedin #taxes
You should have a temporary remote work option. Speak to your HR. We have that at Intel, your salary is adjusted accordingly.
Get a PO box and list your home address as the address of the establishment and instead of saying PO Box # just be like <address> and #nnnn. It looks legit and passes for tax purposes. Take it from a pro 👍
But why would I do that? I already reside in WA and have proper documentation.
Are you suggesting for California? I would be out of my mind to justify living in California when I even don't reside there!!!
I am in same situation.. working for CA company but residing in GA.. my company told they will deduct CA taxes as that's the work location.. you can withheld GA taxes as well if you like but we have to withheld CA.. checked with CA tax dept and they said you have apply for CA refund next year.. https://www.ftb.ca.gov/help/contact/chat.html?WT.ac=ContactUs_Chat
I read somewhere the employer needs to provide a correct W2 for that. If my employer puts work location as Cali and residence as WA, will CA agree for a refund ?
Don't know.. workday has my GA home address and hopefully W2 should have it I guess..
Keep in mind that Li may end up adjusting your salary to WA zone if you get too picky about the situation.
I am not sure what too picky means here. It is about what is correct and what is not. And I had already discussed this with my recruiter prior to joining that I will join from WA and relocate later. I don't mind WA zone adjustment as long as they will readjust in 3 months again when I move to California. I want things to be accurate and will avoid any legal hurdles or penalties.
Does your offer letter say that job is for remote role or it mentions the location? As for the legal hurdle et al, it all comes down to if you file your returns with correct information and not how much tax is deducted by employer. Unless your offer letter mentions location to be WA or remote, it’s you who appears to be on wrong side.

You should get taxed where you do the work, they need to update it.
Yeah that is what I know too.
Depends New Hampshire v. Massachusetts recently upheld Mass taxing remote NH workers who’s work location was in MA. Personally think this is stupid
