Why raises suck and changing companies is the new default. AKA Why YOU should resign

Feb 24 16 Comments

Companies have realized that the market is moving too fast and are growing faster than ever. In this climate, it is better to focus on widening your funnel than on retaining the existing employees. Small turnover rate means your company is at a higher risk of getting entrenched in monoculture and old ideas. To innovate you need fresh blood. Amzn has taken this to the extreme with fire to hire, and most companies with sucky refreshers follow the same philosophy. Loyalty is not rewarded anymore, so VOTE WITH YOUR FEET.

The cost of onboarding is too high for this line of thinking to hold merit.

People who add a lot of value are being compensated for it. If you arenโ€™t getting good raises, you havenโ€™t made yourself indispensable

    • They have no objective way to evaluate employees so they just trust managers word. Before you start you have all the negotiating power. After youโ€™ve joined you have none.

    • It is a bit more nuanced of course. The churn is inevitable, so embracing it is the go to policy. Promoting/retaining employees just does not work on a large scale. Perhaps in small tight knit teams, but as a company policy it makes no sense.

Companies use salary stagnation to even out salaries between people who got hired with high base (e.g. more senior) and people who got hired with little experience. Itโ€™s an incentive to get rid of older workers.
