Teams at Google
Is there a ranking of teams at Google? Obviously such a thing would likely not be explicit, but i would imagine that some teams garner more respect/favor, has better wlb, has better upward mobility, etc. please share why if so.
I heard shopping is the worst
my friend was in ads for a year and then switched to amazon
That is a bit extreme. During my team fit call my teammate did say that wlb was slightly worse but she did 9-4 and most people did 10-5
oh not bc of the WLB, because the culture and people on the team (especially leadership) were miserable. he was at google for 6 years before her mba (diff team), did his mba and went back to google ads post-mba. then left after 15 months to amazon as a sr. program manager
Ads makes google money while most of the rest of the employees enjoy the country club so you can bet they do great work which significantly affects Google’s bottom line and top line which also means they have to work their butts off. Search quality is good too. Brain is now an overcrowded mess. Rest of Google’s team are average by industry standards, despite all the hype about hiring the best and brightest. Stay away from AR/VR, GCP and shopping and pretty much any hardware team.
In terms of popularity I would say Brain is the most famous because everyone wants to do AI research (I think ML is glorified data fitting but who am I to judge) I personally find teams that do low level infra very exciting and at google scale teams that build db/infra and handle 5billion qps are very interesting. Rumour has it Ads has a higher average bonus and relatively faster promo(It doesnt make sense to me though) with a slightly worse wlb(that part was confirmed to me)
Can anyone at G confirm the ads team?
My friend interned at Ads and his manager did say that the avg bonus jere was 22.5 compared to the 17.5 percent in some other team he wanted to join.
