Tech Scene in Raleigh-Durham area?

Anyone have good insights into the tech scene in the Raleigh-Durham area? Good companies to work for? Currently an L4 Systems Development Engineer for AWS in the DC Metro Area and considering a move to Raleigh-Durham area to be closer to family, cheaper cost of living, etc. Also, considering Charlotte as well. Any insights are appreciated!

In my opinion, although there is some presence of tech/fintech companies in Raleigh/Duham area, it's really less compared to DC, most companies that i have seen here are pretty chilled out and laid back in terms of work. So the growth is not so much. Another point to consider is switching jobs in this area can be challenging as there aren't as many companies and the RTP is Overhyped. But considering the living expenses and facilities, it's pretty good.

Can the same be said for Charlotte? I would love the low cost of living compared to DC but not if I have to sacrifice my future career opportunities.

Charlotte seems to be all about fintech. So no matter what you choose, u ll have less opportunities in both Raleigh and Charlotte as compared to DC.

What do you like and dislike about DMV and NOVA? How is the weather & seasons compared to NC?

Amazon bigbuck OP Apr 20, 2019

Can’t speak to how it compares to NC since I’ve never lived in NC. As far as the DMV/NOVA area is concerned, pretty great area overall, always something to do, solid job market (largely government contracting though), definitely get all 4 seasons for weather. On the flip side, high cost of living (one of the highest in the country) and absolutely terrible traffic are big dislikes.

There are satellite offices of Google, Microsoft, Salesforce and others but it's difficult to get into them. Overall RTP is saturated with college graduates and outsourced H1bs so salaries are no where near comparable to West coast.
