Tech companies Location Cat Fishing and Remote is here to stay for a long time

I have been applying and talking to companies for Snr/Staff positions at the large corps (FANGMULA), etc... I have been applying for NYC positions, where it states clearly that the position is based in NYC. Yet, almost every single time (except one), the team, or the manager is based in the SF Bay area. It used to be that employees would location 'catfish' employers, i.e. saying they are in NYC, meanwhile they really are in upstate near Buffalo, NY, or moving to Sacramento, while keeping a SF address. Now it is the opposite. Companies are advertising jobs as location 'X City' (not necessary just remote), but the rest of the team is either in the Bay area, or half distributed. Normally, a NYC based position, should have at least the manager and some members in that location, but this is not the case anymore. There is enough demand that almost all teams have to look beyond one area for talent. My takeaways: 1) Companies are having hard time hiring in the SF Bay Area (Fewer people want to move there right now), and they are forced to hire remote for almost all teams. 2) Companies are capitulating, and offering top dollar even for remote positions, and it is not seen as a 'penalty box' with low ball offers anymore. Expect salaries to increase, even in bumfuck Missipi. The country will still be divided in 1. SF/NYC/Seattle, 2. Other Large Metros (Boston, Austin, Nova, Miami), 3. Middle of nowhere, Bumfuck USA, yet the differences of comp will be a lot smaller (5% for each step down, and not the today 10% + TC decrease). 3) Once the rona is over, and people will start coming back to the office, there is enough mass (at least 15-20%, of senior engineers), that are remote only, or mostly remote; that companies will be forced to accommodate While your career might not accelerate, if you are remote engineer, your job will be safe once people return back to the office. There are so many distributed teams right now, that almost all companies (including Netflix and Apple), will have to accommodate it, or risk becoming boomer IBM.

When Rona is over? Trust me this will never end in the bay area.

Bay Area is hypochondriac crazy in this situation. They have been the most extreme in measures even compared to NYC. Here, the Omicron wave already peaked and things are slowly coming down, hospitalizations are coming down as well, and things are returning into normalcy. Expect by March not to see that many masks around, except where truly required by some kind of law (eg. subway).

They love everything about Rona, it’s perfect for virtue signaling.

I've noticed this too, tons of positions that advertise in various cities, but when you talk to the manager it's always "So... Do you want to move to California? No remote option."

Salaries are driven by the profit margin of the company more than anything. FAANG companies make insane amounts per-engineer, hence why they can pay so much if that's what it takes to make the hire. You'll see FAANG-esque companies start paying big salaries nationally, but lower profit/talent companies won't necessarily follow that lead.
