For people who have worked in both, is their a material difference? Is gaming way more bro culture? ...I've mostly only worked in Riot Games since starting and I'm curious to see what others think
If you’re a straight (white mostly) bro and can hold your liquor (and other chemicals) while working 18 hour work days for lesser pay with no guarantee of a job from month to month go for it. After 10 years working in that space I bailed.
I have worked in both. Broish cultures can be part of either type of company. The main differences I find between the two have to do with the type of professionalism and social groups. At game studios, there's a more laid back type of professionalism. More people tend to be social, with more social events. Outside of the game industry, I find a less social company culture that does not usually have as close knit social circles. Since people in gaming tend to have common hobbies, there's more for them to naturally talk about.
Totally. We work ‘hard’ as in ‘a lot’ but that doesn’t mean we work smart of efficiently. Some of the things people get away with here would have gotten them in trouble at FAANG.
Was previously at Riot and it was definitely more bro than working at FAANG. Riot is also more bro than Blizzard, which feels pretty family oriented. My closest friends say Riot has definitely gotten better about it recently.
Lol no 'disrespect of women'. Yeah sounds like y'all been real respectful.
Your own people have confirmed the harassment on Blind. Something not be typical or common, as vague as that is, makes it no less terrible and worthy of press.
The main difference I've seen isn't the "broish" culture others are citing. That exists in both realms depending on the company. However at companies like Riot, there is much more of a tendency to hire people who are fresh out of college or have never worked outside of games. The result is a huge contingent of people who are overly entitled and don't have a grasp on the realities of working in a professional environment, for a for-profit corporation.
So they are the php developers of the enterprise world.
I've worked in both and apart from the bro culture which I think was more prevelant at Riot 5 years ago than it is now, there is also a lot more misalignment at tech companies about what the actual culture is. Bro-ness aside, at least people at Riot come at things from a player standpoint. In tech they don't really strongly interview for or have a good idea what their culture is, so you get people who are there for all kinds of reasons - to solve hard problems, to get free food, because the name is prestigious, to solve problems they care about, etc. Most people who take the sacrifices to be in games do so because they love games and there's no single unifier like that in the broader tech industry. You also can't assume your coworkers have played Destiny or whatever, because most of them probably don't even play video games
Having coworkers who don’t play/follow any games or any ‘geek stuff’ really sucked
Very this^
Gaming is pretty toxic
I worked hard to become a game dev and then went to work in tech instead 😂. Tech culture is amazing. Now I’m an ar engineer. You can basically just bring your game dev knowledge to tech and have the better culture where you aren’t underpaid and working in shitty conditions. Just be sure you join the right team. Ads, storage infra, etc, are no place for a game dev. It’s a good thing tech companies are going all in on ar/vr now and need people like us.
Hey dude can I pm you to ask about your experience for transition? I am planning to move from swe position to AR/VR dev

I would definitely say companies like Riot Games are a lot more bro culture-y due to Leage culture compared to tech companies. I wouldn't say Riot is conservative, but i'd just say a lot of tech companies are a lot more liberal and open.
Riot is more liberal and less bro than the FANG company I worked at before but more bro than the non tech/games companies I've worked at
You mean liberal and intolerant?
