Anyone planning/tried moving to australia. How is the tech careers in Melbourne and Sydney.
404 lol
We're hiring in Sydney. :)
Does TEAM has dev center in Melbourne?
Not so far as I know but there are some remote teams who I suspect would be very happy to have someone with the same time zone as Sydney. Trello isn't 100% remote any more but they have a LOT of remote roles and I think there are other teams.
It’s pretty small in Melbourne. The three major tech companies are carsales.com, seek (US LinkedIn version) and REA. Many employees tend to rotate between those three.
Google, Atlassian, Canva in Sydney. Strong competition taking into consideration very few solid opportunities.
Comp is garbage
No. Cost of living is high.
I would have to earn over $360k TC in the bay to have an equivalent lifestyle to my job in Melbourne. Plus my rent is $1.7k AUD a month.
I’d go for Australia in a heartbeat. The tech culture is booming. Lots of great companies to work for. Most of the people here have either never worked in Australia or just have a mis-understanding or hatred towards Australia. Australia, especially Sydney has all the FAAMG offices! People are hired depending on their potential. The immigration policies are fair, the weather is great, the pay is good, lifestyle is fantastic! If you’re good at what you’re doing you’d shine anywhere in the world.
Clearly you don’t live in Australia. The tech market is very narrow. FAANG have branches here but that are either support or service or sales. SDE roles are rare finds. If you are already in US and doing moderate in tech don’t come to Australia.
"They don’t have recessions and winter." umm yeah, about that ... Covid is an interesting experience and each state is handling it differently. Here in WA (Western Australia) we've got hard borders and mandatory quarantine for incoming and you'd better have a really good reason to try. <https://jtsi.wa.gov.au/about-the-state/quality-of-life/economy> and <https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-08-28/port-hedland-two-speed-economy-pandemic-hard-border/12593994> suggest that things are okay here. I'm just a bit apprehensive because sooner or later we're going to let a covid-carrier in.

Clearly you’ve never been to Melbourne
It is a dream of mine. I’m hoping Qantas get that 20hr long flight going soon.
