I'm thinking about moving to Singapore (currently citizen of U.S.). Having 2 kids (5 and 7) is it a good place to raise kids, live a decent life and have a good career growth? Both of us are software engineers in FANG. Any cons/pros? Thanks. Household TC: 550 (Seattle)
Just interviewed with a few companies.Tech scene is strong -you won’t get the same salary but If your Asian (Indian/Chinese/Filipino etc)its pretty much the best place in Asia to live. Also a great place to raise a family from what people say.Its too small so owning a house/car will be expensive
550k TC holy shit ! 👍🏻👏🏻
It's for 2 people, not just me. Both of us are at FANG, so it's pretty normal.
Can you handle the weather there? Same hot humid temperature 365 days a year.
We're handling Seattle whether, so I guess yes?
Crazy rich asians effect
I'm not Asian, and not rich.
Apparently you didn’t get it. It is a movie shot in Singapore and showing the good side of living there..
What does Singapore offer you that Seattle or US don't?
Seriously? They’re very different places. I’ve only visited both, have friends in both, haven’t live there - but still the contrasts are palpable. Every place has its pros/cons, no less true here. Friends there say Singapore has low(er) political drama, among highest levels of public safety in the world, high quality of life, and far lower taxes than US.
I don't want my kids to be raised in a country where every family has access to gun and every month there's a shooting at schools.
I will move back to Singapore a few years.
Singapore is a very popular place to raise a family. Nearly all expats with kids have a live-in helper which is probably the most affordable child care you'll find in the developed world. Your kids won't be allowed to go to public schools so you'll need to factor in that cost. Post-tax income will decrease by roughly a third with other COL factors roughly balancing out to Seattle. I found Singapore to be a good hub for exploring Southeast Asia for a couple years, but on its own, it gets boring after a little while.
Thanks for the insight. Didn't know about public schools.
Hey spent some time in Bay Area at some point and I must say SG is great for raising a family comparably. Food options are awesome, and convenience of getting anywhere is unparalleled. Also, vacation in nearby exotic hotspots (Bali, koh samui, cebu) is just a 2h flight away. Safety is a big plus as well. My company I believe will try to match your current tc, so worth a shot. Let me know if you want to chat more
There is no way u can keep current salary.
Ok, but isn't the COL less there? Any idea?
Depends on the life you want. If you’re looking for a life that emulates what you have in Seattle, COL will be extremely high.
