Has anyone made this transition after a few years in tech? I’ve seen senior level folks at Amazon move to senior level roles at VC funds but hardly anyone below 35 do this. Would love to hear your stories or stories you’ve heard. TC: 150K, YOE 2.
Senior Eng or Product? Don’t see how VCs would find your experience valuable unless you are VP or founder.
I was under the impression that VC is much more qualitative than PE. Having a technical background understanding the product would be more of an asset than say financial modeling skills when startups tend to have none or even negative cash flow. With that said, I think it’s more common to go via the MBA route after a few years in Engineering.
Maybe it would work out at an analyst role, but to anyone significant would be from senior investment, product, or previous founder.
The primary qualification for VC is access to resources. When you have those in spades, you’ll know.
What resources do you mean? Like friends in high places?
I’m using the dictionary definition - Financial resources - the value of this is clear. You don’t have to be rich, you need trusted access to rich people. People resources - necessary in making things happen (technical, political, etc are sub categories of this). Material resources - the intangibles. Rocket startup needs an army base to test their satellite launcher. I gotchu.
Venture capital industry is getting disrupted in many ways. Like icos, others in parallel industry doing the same. I don’t know if you want that as you career. Having said nothing should stop you from having an investment career but not necessarily VC
Maybe you can tell us why do you think you can be a good VC?
If you were to ask me that at the moment, I wouldn’t have much to say. It’s more about wanting to work on the skill set to be ready for entry level a few years down the line. Planning ahead because I’m lacking now.
Also, I didn’t go to college. ;)
What’s your role now?
