What exactly is this role? Google has a position opening and I think it would be a good fit if I wanted to become a TPM or PM later. They get to work with big clients it seems they drive some of the product features based on partner needs which I think is pretty darn cool. I'm sure they don't code as much though. Any insights?
TSE is a customer support engineer. You won't be a SWE or SRE, which are the roles that everyone respects and generally have the most transfer flexibility. You definitely won't be regularly coding products. You may be coding internal tools, you will be expected to use the products you support (so cloud TSE's set up cloud projects, which almost always involves some code). Transfer to PM and TPM will only occur if you demonstrate the skills (own the details, strong communication skills, rhetoric, leadership by argument (not authority)). It can get you into Google, which I think is a great employer, and from which you can transfer to any other role you're good at. It's a necessary role, but you'll find that you are in the "second rank" and that the recruiter is kind of fluffing up the role.
Customer support or partner support? I feel like partner support has a much higher impact than customer support and you have more influence over product?
I'd add that TSE is similar to support role. it's not likely you'll be able to switch to PM or TPM. you can easily move around in support and find other Sr leadership positions.
Sre = site reliability engineer?
yes, SRE is Site Reliability Engineer, aka empowered ops.
OP: so you’re a TSE now ? What’s your take on the role
