Tech (Amazon, Facebook etc) hire MBA grads (with 2-4 years of experience) at Level 6. Meanwhile, PhDs get hired at Level 5. And a hardworking MS CS can sometimes take almost a decade to get to Level 6. What’s the justification?
Those PhDs are fresh out with 0 yoe. Not to mention we earn significantly more when we publish, patent etc. depending on team.
A PhD has 6 years of grueling experience and mastery over the subject that they’re hired for. A person in the industry could take double the # of years to reach that level of expertise. And why hold PhDs at a higher bar to get the deserving level and money? Even other people’s pay should then be tied to their eventual contributions of the company
Because it's about production. You produce you get paid. Any company will pay you to produce.
Because it takes a combination of business, technical, product, and people skills to scale a company or a product line or a business vertical. There are a plenty of non MBA folks who get there who build the experience required to lead on the job itself. Just having pure horsepower to write code is not the only thing that you need to build companies. Fresh MBAs at Amazon are at least around 28, while a CS grad with a master's maybe around 26. Even with a couple of years of extra experience, Amazon doesn't pay fresh b-school grads as much as it offers fresh MS grads. The pay difference exists for a long period and it only gets better for b-school grads once they reach senior management levels... that's around principal pm level at Amazon. Now the folks who do make it to principal pm level aren't your average guys or gals and are a small percentage of all b-school grads who enter Amazon. If you want to generalize it, most computer science grads you survey will still report higher TCs than MBA grads at Amazon.
Wrong. MBAs at FB get hired at L4. Same at google. Amazons level are a joke.
Only at Amazon its that way. Everywhere else MBAs r disliked

Seattle people, what cars do you have? 🙂
They make less. Don’t get caught up on levels.
L6 Senior Product Managers make plenty. Besides, their end game is much higher TC because they also rise up into leadership positions much faster because of the MBA and the business track
