Tele-operated Fake Self-Driving Cars

I’m shocked to see fake self driving cars being allowed on public streets. After the Uber crash, I feel unsafe driving besides self-driving cars that are being tele-operated by companies like Phantom.auto and Zoox. Do you think tele-operated cars should be allowed on streets? If yes, how will you ensure network latency? WTF: https://venturebeat.com/2017/12/06/phantom-auto-uses-humans-to-remotely-control-self-driving-cars-in-a-pickle/ I heard they are launching autonomous delivery services using this tech.

OH MY GOD. This is a disaster especially considering technical limitations and requirements for over the air communication. Do these companies think we are playing a video game here?!

This makes zero sense.

Another disaster waiting to happen. They are using Logitech steering wheel and pedald. What a joke.

Technical it is ok because UAV has been doing this in Afghan for a while. The problem is they are trying to fool people thinking it is a real AV.

That's the stupidest idea I've ever seen. I ain't hand my life on this shit.

AT&T DJcH62 Mar 24, 2018

Yeh, a UAV is mostly flying with no other planes in sight and hence chances of crashes are negligible. Though these guys will only be controlling the cars during emergencies and not all the time. It is still ridiculous. The Uber driver was sitting in the car and was distracted and didn't have the required response time to stop the car. Imagine doing this from an office environment hundreds of miles away. I am baffled that investors put money in such ideas.

Dude, driving on road with other moving vehicles within few feets is totally different from UAV flying at 40 thousand ft with nothing around them for miles. Precision requirements are very different.

How is this legal? Can the system pass a driver's test?

Microsoft yMcg47 Mar 24, 2018

I think this is a great idea if there are guidelines. The cars need to have sensors and autostop to override drivers.

I don't think people are reading the article.

“it would be really hard to achieve perfection. And any amount of error could be disastrous for passengers.”

Uber PuckleRuck Mar 25, 2018

This is a backup for self-driving cars. If you don't want a manual operator to get a self driving car out of a jam, then you just don't want self-driving cars at all.

Uber Demapples Mar 25, 2018

Sorry Phantom but this is not the way. When cars can drive themselves in all but the stickiest situations, remote operators setting breadcrumbs makes way more sense then remotely “piloting” then.

Uber PuckleRuck Mar 25, 2018

Probably, but it doesn't make the other option bad.
