Hi, I got the opportunity to work in both companies. I'd like people to weigh on both. Databricks (cloud infra): pros: get to see SF for once, close to IPO culture, better WLB (arguably), knowledge is more transferable across tech companies Akuna Capital (data infra): pros: Chicago, learn about trading culture, a lot of interesting problems, talented system design folk #databricks #akunacapital
Databricks, pre-IPO / close-to-IPO (?) has more upside imo
Well it's an internship, so the IPO bit doesn't apply. However since both are infra related roles, I'd recommend databricks.
I’m obviously biased, but I think you’d have a great experience with us and would encourage you to come
Could you tell me more about what it's like? How many interesting tech challenges are left over? What are coworkers like?
I didn't join Akuna Data Infra. Go with Databricks. If it was C++ role, I'd habe told to join Akuna. But not for Data Infra.
Whats so good about the C++ role? Isnt it like building quant dev dashboards and whatnot?
Nope. You get to build the main infra that the trading firm works on. The traders build strategies that work on your C++ infra. In a Data infra role, you will just be making data pipeline for the traders. You'll be third teir basically, almost post trade. These kind of roles are called back office roles. You do not bring direct revenue to the company. If you were C++ role then you can join a trading team to work with them front office and directly impact the team's earnings and you'd get a cut of those earnings.
Honestly both are good but I’d say Akuna easily. They’re way more selective and trading is hard to get into. Being at Uber and Akuna sets you up to get into top HF/trading firms down the line or go back to tech if you’d like. Think long term.
You should read the post again. OP said it's a data infra team. Unless it's a trading team you wouldn't want to join akuna.
OP, what was the Databricks offer? Just got an offer too, and wanted to check if numbers are the same. Feel free to DM as well.
Databricks.
