Do not use this app for high-value (>$100) purchases, or purchases for which you aren't very sure of what you may be getting. Learnt it the hard way, and am regretting ever using the app! Customer service is unresponsive and hence good as non-existent, and won't refund you your payment for a spurious sale without literally & figuratively making you run around in circles, because they receive a cut from every sale made. Penalize the buyer, and let the real culprit (the seller) go scott-free. Shame on you, @OfferUp, for not enforcing even basic-level & easy-to-implement checks, for not accepting proof of duplicity at face value, AND for creating a highly stressful experience out of what should've been a no-more-than-one-question-asked refund!
Customer service???? It’s a used goods thing. It’s totally between you and seller. Think of it as craigslist. I’ve been using it for many years. Always do local transactions. Meet in a public place and set expectations that you’ll back but if you spot a problem. Take someone with you. I got screwed only two times but that’s OK given that the products cost significantly less than MRP+Tax+Shipping.
Yup, I made the mistake of purchasing a high value product.
What did you buy? If you don’t mind telling us?
If reality matches the impression you are trying to make, call credit card to dispute and initiate charge back.
Is this possible even with debit card purchases? Offer-Up asked me to file a complaint with local law enforcement when I reported the electronics item. Like, are you kidding? Even the seller is willing to take back the item, but no, OfferUp is withholding my refund!
I'm relatively new to this country (legally) and the last thing I want to do is say 'Hello' to my local Law Enforcement. I've neither the time, the inclination, and in my view - justification - for running around for this now!
>$100 is high value?! I thought we all make $360k TC..
I mentioned a relatively low threshold (I paid much more). But even if one made the amount you indicated, I'd not automatically disregard $100. Because whatever my current $$, it was hard-earned (not to mention that THAT money could've been put to other good use, besides the fact that uncooperative sellers & companies should be called out regardless).
I was specifically questioning $100 as high value. I still am.
I think OfferUp does warn about scam doing remote sale. It’s pretty established fact not to do remote sell with strangers and its common sense to avoid it.
Oh these days their app is all over you. They are pushing for remote sale, payments via offer up. Big time. Fuck them.
This was a purchase through OfferUp, and I was the ill-fated/ stupid buyer! The app discourages money exchange outside of their app! I followed all their rules and still!
Do they take a cut if you post something locally and exchange goods, like Craigslist?
I think if you post something & it gets sold (on/ off the app) and it's above a certain value, you'll be charged. So, yes. But read their Terms to be sure
It’s hard to negotiate with he neighbor :)
Thanks, will keep in mind
FTF only if not using credit card
Isn't this like Craigslist?
Yes and no. Remote sale & transactions are possible here.
If you do remote sale and transaction for used electronics then I really feel sorry you. You will be back here many times. I saw their shipping nonsense and it’s a total trap. When buying used goods check before paying.
