Hi guys, i am a new grad with a Master in CS. I currently have 2 offers from Tesla in Fremont CA and Microsoft in Redmond WA, but I dont know which to choose in term of location, career growth and compensation. 1. Tesla: Fremont, 110k base, no signin bonus, 60k stock/ 4 years 2. Microsoft: Redmond, 117k base, 20k signin bonus, 75k stock/5 years I currently live in Bay Area, already has a house in Bay Area and my wife is working here as well, but Seattle seems provide more relax life. Please advise
Msft vests in 3.5 years. Are you sure about your vesting? Looks wrong
The offer did not mention vesting period, only mentions stock award will be subject to term of Microsoft 2017 Stock Plan, so I googled it and i found the vesting period is 5 years. May be i am wrong.
Stock awards do vest over 5 years, quarterly. Sign on stocks vest yearly from 0.5y to 3.5y
Tesla will overwork you, but Microsoft might be boring if you're young.
Do u know anyone who worked at Tesla before ?
Tesla wlb varies heavily from team to team. My team is very reasonable and I find my manager to be very fair. It’s not the case with all teams here. I’m less familiar with the state of things at Fremont, so take this all with a grain of salt. You should be able to negotiate a higher RSU grant as a new grad with a master’s in CS. Shoot for $100k, and don’t accept anything under $80k.
Thanks for your advice
Microsoft. Awesome work life balance. Almost no layoffs in their core businesses.
Thanks for your advice
Microsoft
Thanks for your advice
Negotiate then accept MS. You can nearly double signon and stock. Seattle is definitely more relaxed and beautiful. Wlb at MS is the best.
Thanks for your answer. What is Wlb, i see ppl use a lot, but i dont get it. Is that possible to ask for open positions of MS in the Bay Area? Do you know which team in the Bay. Thanks
Weather is better in CA, COL is much cheaper in Seattle and no state income tax. SF is a cooler city than Seattle but you probably don't live in the city, anyway. Outdoor recreational activities are about equal. Food is better in SF.
Thanks for your answer. How about the work environment. I believe you are working in Seattle. Thanks
I am on the Redmond campus. It's really nice. Work culture obviously varies dramatically depending on the team but in general WLB is good. Living on the east side is a bit bland but it's great if you have kids. If you prefer living in Seattle, the connector bus is great.
