Tesla just showcased full self driving. Thoughts? šŸæ

Things to note in the video: - Stop signs - Yields signs - Traffic lights - Speed limits - Merging Lanes All this without LIDAR. I am interested in understanding the opinion of people from Waymo, Uber, Tesla and other companies working on self-driving tech. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tlThdr3O5Qo

I would take any announcement by musk around quarterly earnings with a grain of salt

Andrej is right. LIDAR is a shortcut to FSD. But at the end of the day itā€™s very expensive and ugly. Hereā€™s an example https://youtu.be/7Hlb8YX2-W8

General Motors QEmN10 Apr 23, 2019

Come on, is there a Tesla required training for drinking the kool aid. Literally every other company is using a similar approach except Tesla. Thereā€™s a fine line between crazy genius and just crazy. Not one demo at night, with sun glare, snow or lots of rain?

Tesla uhhyhhgh Apr 23, 2019

With lidar you just save time. Makes no sense in case with fsd

Accident waiting to happen

No humans crossing the road, no construction zone. Are there anything else that is obviously missing here in the demo?

And in the meantime a Tesla self destructed in Shanghai.

Is in on a perfect day without any rain? Probably

Uber Unofficial Apr 23, 2019

Yes, this is possible on a Perfect day, perfect technology, prefect human behavior, perfect regulatory framework, perfect support infrastructure ā€” Only Musk believes by 2020. One chip and software alone doesnā€™t solve Unpredictability of human behavior , weather conditions, and lack of ride share network with actual human drivers

So, it's still driver's assistance at it's best?

Google Qlan Apr 23, 2019

Self driving is easy in 99% of situations. What is hard (very very hard) is to get the 1% right.

But are we humans better than that 1%?

Google shito Apr 23, 2019

But here is the problem - if the self driving tech is as good as humans, it's no use. Human psychology dictates that you are generally forgiving even if you were at fault, only as long as you were on the driver's seat. People feel falsely safe in their cars when they drive than if they are being driven by someone else. For self driving tech to succeed, it has to be significantly better, or the stuff can't be justified.
