Tesla self-driving appears to be a joke...

https://twitter.com/eiddor/status/1177749574976462848 This is the car that’s supposed to be fully autonomous in a year? It can’t even drive out of a parking lot... I love Tesla, and this car looks super sleek, but this self-driving promise seems questionable. When do you think that cars will be capable of reliably making trips 100% on their own in the bay area, including streets, parking, and freeways?

I think perfecting smart summon will take a while. It’s a good start. It’s very cautious and drives slowly, but it avoids obstacles. This is the only video so far where I’ve seen this issue. I guess it didn’t predict the incoming car to be going at way beyond parking lot speeds. It’s not perfect of course. Check out top few YouTube videos on smart summon

Fan boy detected. Of course the car was going beyond parking speed. It just turned in from the main road.

Nutanix 1adja134 Oct 4, 2019

Uh that’s no excuse for it to go at that speed. Did you pass the driving test?

Nutanix 1adja134 Sep 29, 2019

Btw, I believe self driving within parking lots is actually a slightly different and maybe harder problem to solve than driving on roads. You have pedestrians coming in at random directions but you don’t have lights, etc.

True, my husband can't drive in parking lots either.

Oh fuck. That’s legit bad.

Tesla’s Navigate on Autopilot is pretty good. TBH I don’t really care about parking lot driving. I just want to press a button and the car drives to the destination automatically and I can find parking myself.

Nutanix 1adja134 Sep 29, 2019

The whole parking problem is more complex which is why it’s much awaited. The use case is small but the complexity of the problem makes a compelling case for normal full self driving in the near future. It’s an indicator for Tesla’s readiness

I can find a crap ton of videos that would prove to you that putting a human in charge of driving a car is a terrible idea.

LinkedIn Zeiwkf5 Sep 29, 2019

That being said, the video doesn’t look good.

Other companies will probably reach the full autonomy goal faster, utilizing more expensive hardware to do so.

I believe summon is not supposed to be used like this to cross the road with high speed traffic. It's only designed to be used in environment with slow moving objects, like parking lot or driveway.

Apple majong Sep 30, 2019

Then that makes it kinda unnecessary and actually pointless
