I'm evaluating an offer from them. Considering RSU I have a 14% incremental offer on my current job which will vest over 4 years, promised green card processing from day 1 of joining. I've heard a lot of bad things about work life balance at tesla, 700 let go without severance last Oct. On the other hand my current place has job security, flexible work hours with good work life balance, 401k matching but dicey green card situation. Looking for other companies too. Any advice?
Tesla will be shut down soon
Check the stock price
Check their financials..
Role and TC will help. Without these details it’s difficult to give advice.
I know it's a hype company, but don't forget there is a high chance it will go completely bankrupt and your rsus will be worth 0
Or exactly opposite of that ?
Yep it will be one or the other. Still, if you want a certain payout and stable employment, don't go there
Does not appear safe. How much time do you have left on your H1 from the 6 yrs allotted? Meaning if your current company is not bad, I would consider putting some more time in search
I have a little over 3 years left on my h1b. My current company is definitely good. It's just the green card and no growth opportunity that bugs me.
Funny to see how all the responses are from people who don’t work at Tesla. I’m pretty sure the op knows to search google news too
It all depends on the team/group. I’m in a high pressure team, but just today I talked with a friend that is doing some backend kind of work for the cloud on the vehicle side and he’s doing his 9-5 and everyone is happy about it. On the job security, if you’re not good or involved enough, then you will be let go without going through any PIP whatsoever. For manager it is difficult because if you rate an engineer as underperforming then you will likely have to justify why you want to keep this person and if you have a plan for making him successful.
How long would you be stuck if they file for GC? And can you get your current employer to get on it to make you stay? Tesla is pretty brutal in some spots. Very long hours and high pressure, going from crisis situation to crisis situation. Fremont based software projects can be... let’s just say they seem to have a lower bar for hiring. So if you’re good, you might get frustrated over the quality of your teammates. Not true for all teams, but for some.
Work life balance, highly dependent on team. And that's for Palo Alto. I would expect fremont to be more intense due to the current ramp up. Job security, if you can prove yourself to be a key member, i wouldn't worry about it.
One thing you should consider is it will open up a lot more opportunities as compared to Target. :)
Tesla does not start GC from first day. Don't fall for their bullshit. My coworker did not start his perm application for 1 year and he had to push the lawyers to start doing it. Even then they are really slow. Look elsewhere. Lot of turnover and they expect you to be working 24/7.

Worried that our top performer is an attrition risk. How do managers handle this?
