I have never worked for a Bay Area/Silicon Valley company before. But I now work with a lot of people who are live there and are used to that culture. As someone used to living in the real world, it seems like people there are spoiled brats and cry babies used to companies giving them lots of stuff and used to being paid tons of money. Grow up. Work pays you what you are worth and to do a job, they give you the tools to get your job done - a desk, a laptop and maybe a Keurig machine for coffee. If you want better coffee, buy it from Starbucks. Don’t cry and whine if work doesn’t give you more than that. Fair or harsh? Edit: This generated a lot of hate and support. I would be curious to find out if most of the hate was from Bay Area people and most of the support was from people in the rest of the U.S….or not… People in the Bay Area should think about the fact that America is a big country and the Bay Area does not equal the USA.

Should I marry a lazy girl?

Op, please never ever become a manager. People will suffer from working for you
"suffer"..... It's not suffering to go to work, get paid fairly, and go home. Silicon valley babies are used to being coddled with ridiculous extreme perks that subsidize their life even further, like free meals, free bikes, free gym, discounts on therapy and other shit that most people just pay for with their salary...... It's unnecessary
In principle it’s fine. The problem is that it skews people’s ideas of what’s normal, and people always want more. So no matter how good you make their lives, they just never stop wanting more
Lol are you crying about companies giving people good perks? I dont see the issue here.
I enjoy the perks but the level of entitlement here is astonishing. Agree 110% with OP.
@Google, if that's the case, then give an example of entitlement and I'd be glad to agree with it. It's stupid to complain about "entitlement" for just being paid well and having good non-salary compensation (aka "perks")
Slave mentality is real and strong!
Sometimes you should check WITCH companies in India or even US. That's real slave mentality.
“Slave mentality” - use some of that Bay Area comp to buy yourself a dictionary you absolute embarrassment.
"Stop complaining about the way large corporations, who only care about increasing share holder value, treat their employees" I'm with you. People should just shut up and take their licks like they used to back in the day.
Who are you licking these days?
Why should people not want working conditions to be as good as possible?
So I’ve worked for Bay Area-based companies but at satellite offices elsewhere and I agree that there’s a distinct culture that I think sometimes is disconnected from what I consider to be “the real world.” However, I disagree with the compensation piece of your argument; I’ve generally found my Bay Area co-workers to have a good sense of what their time is worth and aware of the fact that they have plenty of options in that area. I don’t think that’s bratty.
As someone who has worked for many companies here, it’s disgusting the level of entitlement people here have. It almost makes me ashamed to even be a part of it, but the money is too good to pass up. Here’s some examples of entitlement I’ve seen: * complaining because the company bought them $1k worth of computer equipment but required the employee to provide receipts * complaining because employees will be required to return to office * complaining because we didn’t get Juneteenth off as a holiday even though it was officially made a holiday 1 day in advance. * complaining because there aren’t tampons in the men’s restroom * complaining because company subsidized cafes serve meat * complaining because they got reprimanded for violating a well documented company policy * complaining because there weren’t enough varieties of almond butter in the kitchen. * complaining because, despite spending millions upon millions of dollars to hire more diverse talent, we still just can’t find the people. * complaining because salary will be adjusted for cost of living if they relocate The list goes on, I’ve seen so much entitlement out here it makes me physically sick
You could always work somewhere for less money if you're so principled
That is the key. If there are people elsewhere in the U.S. who are just as smart/productive and are not used to all that stuff, what advantage do the people in the Bay Area offer to justify spending massive amounts more coddling them?
Snowflake.
Company name checks out.
Uhh….what would you consider snowflake?
It is absolutely a silicone valley/Bay Area company. My point was that this culture is new to me. I am used to just being paid to get my job done. But apparently some people are used to more than that. 🤷🏻♂️
Easy to call people spoiled as an IPO millionaire lottery winner.
