This is mostly a rant than anything. But also curious what folks think around here.

A year and a half ago, when the pandemic was young and the vaccines were around the corner, my partner and I decided to settle in SF for the forseeble future. We bought a house.

It seems our conjecture of the pandemic being short lived was wrong. Living close to the HQ in the Silicon Valley seems to be less and less important career-wise, folks are not really going back to the office, people are leaving SF in droves and SF quality of life is getting worse and worse. I am quite unhappy with my decision, but the effort of moving somewhere else is way too big at this point.

In particular, it feels this city is going downhill a lot. Every time we go downtown for a concert, dinning, etc., it is simply horrible. Store closures all over the place, way more than in other cities. Homeless folks trashing everything, simply disgusting. Feels unsafe, ugly. We pay 30K in property taxes and over 100K in state taxes, and it feels it is the worst deal ever. Trash on the streets, potholes all over the place in and around Noe Valley where we live, graffiti littering traffic signs ... what the heck is going on!

OP - yep, hit the nail in the head. Have you seen the news recently that they’re spending $837k on housing per homeless while the working class can’t even afford housing in a safe area for less than 800k? https://www.google.com/amp/s/abcnews.go.com/amp/Politics/wireStory/la-spending-837000-house-single-homeless-person-83072411 And where does this money come from? Yeah, us struggling middle class. Democratic policies want to wipe out the middle class completely, until the day no one owns anything of their own, and we’ll have no choice but to depend on a Democratic government’s welfare and freebies.

This is another scam, the money or help never reach the real people who needed but eaten away by all these non profits mostly connected to gov. They never spend the money on actual projects instead most money goes to salaries of the few employees. Cali has 70billion surplus on budget, do we ever hear of investment into any forward looking projects. The local gov get more money on property tax due to housing but nothing reaches or spent on projects that help people.

The “crime” is ultimately good because it chases away the techies who ruined it. It was paradise until the late 90s. Here’s to the renaissance of San Francisco!

I agree that 80's/90's were golden in SF, I do not blame techies for the decline in SF. It's really the SF government that squandered all the prosperity to grow itself like a cancer.

No matter how much money SF gets in Taxes, they'll find a way to burn it on useless/overspend virtue signaling projects.

I find it appalling how newsom even has the balls to shamelessly come out and say California has so much money leftover while our streets are burning and people dying

I just turned down a job in San Francisco because the city is awful. I went to Stanford, lived in Russian hill (which I liked), but the cost of living didn’t fit the quality of life. I won’t return until it’s much safer, cleaner, and normal.

I lived in Florida for many years and it was not for me. Humidity was unbearable and it feels the entire state is rural area. There are many friendly and nice people who will make your day but there are also really bad people. I think the spectrum is wider than Seattle or California.

Searchforn- I can understand why you’d think it’s a choice to live under those conditions and that these people are just milking tax payer’s money to buy drugs. But in reality, no human being “chooses” to live under those conditions and homeless. The majority of people who are homeless are sadly addicts, and addiction inflicts their lives in such a way that they have to flock to another city for drugs - this is a case of despair and desperation primarily inflicted by a system that only work for some, so it’s not of choice.

Not everybody has the luxury and privilege of education, not everyone grew up in sustainable and nurturing households, not everyone had food on their table when they were kids or parents around. Not everyone had the privilege of having a life away from the hardships that results in addiction.

So I guess I’m just saying, these folks need help. And I’m not claiming I know the answer.

I know my post might generate a lot arguments and opinions, but I hope it doesn’t since it seems like everything is polarized now a days. I just wanted to share insight from a different angle so we can look at folks who are homeless and addicts with more compassion and less hate.

I also wanted to add that I agree with the author /OP of this post. Its very tough living in a city where homelessness is constantly in your face and the lower quality of life for residents as a result. I live in DT Seattle and if you’ve been here you know it’s getting as bad as SF. So I’m not disagreeing with the pain points listed on the post.

  • Saw recent videos of break-in and got really scared. Even if I buy a house, my buddies will never visit me due to car break in. Also noticed the houses are attached to neighbors house. Not sure who got do maintenance etc. Police just said they have bigger fish to fry. Not sure how locals if sf are so nice. I would have got hold of the mayor and give the piece of my mind.

Try doing that in North Korea - if their leaders photo was in the vehicle, that guy would go through a hell and wish for death sentence.
