I'm reading the book "The No Asshole Rule" by Robert Sutton. It is certainly thought provoking and makes me reflect on my experience at Microsoft and the existence of 'Assholes', as well as Microsoft's reactions to dealing with assholes within the workplace. Assholes can be a real drag on morale and performance. What companies out there (if they even exist) have very low toxicity from the trenches all the way up the ladder? I'm looking to VWYF to a happier place... TC: 180k #tech #happiness

That’s surprising tbh There’s always an asshole I guess at every company
The best engineers I’ve worked with are almost exclusively assholes, but in that extreme high standards sort of way, rather than personal attacks or dirty politics. You can’t just make a blanket no assholes rule or you’ll end up with a team of vision-less, agreeable, yes-men that can’t get anything done
There's a whole section of the book titled "Don't Replace Assholes with Wimps and Polite Clones" "... this book is not an argument for recruiting and breeding spineless wimps." "Not only do I despise spineless and obsequious wimps, but there is good evidence that they damage organizations." "The right kind of friction can help any organization." "A series of controlled experiments in field studies and organizations shows that when teams engage in conflict over ideas in an atmosphere of mutual respect, they develop better ideas and perform better."
You don't have to be an asshole to say No. Just because you have only come across either yes-men/women or assholes doesn't mean there aren't other type of people
I’m not sure if you will always get that perfect “no asshole” company. Really depends on your team and org. The one thing I learnt overtime is instead of being affected by the assholes, always evaluate the overall gains vs stresses. If gains outweigh the stresses then cruise for a bit and then leave but if stresses outweigh gains bail immediately. Even if someone here tells you their company is perfect, it’s a relative perspective and you might not experience the same even if you went to that company. There will always be trade offs to consider. Make the best of what you got! Cheers!

Zendesk hires strongly based on a no asshole rule (sometimes too much). It's pretty well enforced.
I think it's almost impossible for big companies to be in that category. Higher probability that smaller companies might have what you are looking for
That's a good point!
