Why don't we have this right? So big telecom and hardware companies have lobbied the government so that as consumers we can't repair our own devices...I never understood this since if we bought the gadget we should also have the right to fix it from whoever we want. Instead because of these laws in place we have to pay whatever the telecom or hardware company deems fit to fix our electronics. Just read on motherboard that there's a telecom company called Ting that will allow its customers to fix their own products. Thought the idea was refreshing...Anyone feel the same? Why in the world do we have to fix our iphone through Apple? Don't get it... https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/article/eveezj/a-cell-phone-carrier-breaks-with-big-telecom-announces-support-for-right-to-repair-legislation
I don’t get it. Why should it be your right to buy “repair tools and parts”? How are you supposed to repair a cloud-based gadget if it stops working?
Right != ability
You can replace that shattered phone screen. But why does it have to be a right? If I sell a lock, do I have to sell a lockpick for it just in case someone wants to “repair”?
Does another company have the right to sell the lockpick for your lock even if you don't provide that support?
Here is the thing, how do you make money when you can’t sell any more due to saturation.
So simple. Many of us have insurance through the telco or hardware company. If a 3rd party vendor fucks it up worse, our insurer does not want to pay for the additional damage that could have been prevented from using one of their techs. They’d also miss out on your copay. I think another part of it is some form of weak IP protection. 3rd parties should not be reverse engineering your tech and learning how to repair it. Not sure if any of these rules are a real deterrent though 🤷🏽♀️
So, the thread is a but misleading... you HAVE the right to repair already... the ‘right to repair’ legislature would require manufacturers to sell parts & tools... which would infringe on their right to sell what they want not what they must...
Don’t they also want like schematics? 😂
How would they prevent you from repairing what you own? Get a rework station and have at it.
Last time I got my iPhone (6S I believe) screen replaced by an independent place, the new screen had hot spots (bright spots) all over it and the proximity sensor no longer worked. A little QC makes things a lot better.
Corporations want absolute control of you and everything you own, we should break them up
