The struggle is real

Just wanted to share my depressing journey although I am trying my best to stay positive. It's been a year since I've left my team due to PIP and have been trying to secure a role as a PgM, but after numerous attempts, nothing has panned out. I reached out to friends, networked, and got referrals but nothing really unfolded. Surprisingly, all my interviews were secured by applying online without referrals except for Uber. The other referrals seem to go to a blackhole. My journey: Pinterest - rejected after final rounds onsite Square - rejected after final rounds onsite Stripe - rejected after final rounds onsite Fitbit - rejected after final rounds onsite Google - rejected after final rounds onsite Atlassian - rejected after final rounds onsite Facebook - rejected after final rounds onsite after follow-up video chat with another team lead Microsoft - rejected after final rounds onsite Microsoft (2nd position) - rejected after hiring manager phone screen I've prepped using STAR formatted answers, had numerous mock interviews, and received positive feedback and constructive criticism that I took into consideration. I've read success stories here on Blind to keep my hunger and ambition going but I'm starting to lose motivation. There's the saying, "When a door closes, another opens" but nothing is opening up for me. Anyway, happy Friday everyone. TC - $0

You have done only interviews in the past 1 year after leaving Amazon? Or did you do some part time gigs / contracting?

Amazon epmF77 OP Mar 6, 2020

I interviewed for contractor roles too but the agencies only had administrative or sales roles.

Maybe tech is not for you. Did you explore anything else in the previous year? Anything you enjoyed?

Omg that is scary. I've been applying the few months too, luckily I'm currently employed but very not happy here. Are you h1b visa?

Amazon epmF77 OP Mar 6, 2020

Yes, it is. This stage in my life really opened my eyes and I don't wish this scenario on anyone. I am not on H-1B.

I am in your same situation for the last 3 months, it is definitely very scary, and with covid now it is even more, best of luck fella, you are not alone

Amazon zooooed Mar 6, 2020

@OP Did you receive any feedback from your interviewers?

Amazon epmF77 OP Mar 6, 2020

I got very vague feedback as they're not allowed to disclose information. It's usually along the lines that someone else had a slightly better work experience but I'm sure their wording is heavily downplayed to ease the pain.

my list is 3 times of yours.. hang in there... you need to push more

Amazon epmF77 OP Mar 6, 2020

Mines actually longer, but I excluded all the situations where recruiters ghosted after scheduling interviews or rejections after the hiring manager video/phone screenings...unless you're referring to only onsite interviews. However, thanks for the words of encouragement -- I'm definitely pushing but I agree with you that I need to push more.

Keep doing it, ask yourself what u missed from each interview, improve that and u will reach there

Amazon pipsagogo Mar 6, 2020

OP, I am in the same boat, but at 3 months of unemployment. So many 1st/2nd/3rd interview rejects that it is literally getting hard to think about the remaining companies to apply to. Now the virus scare seems to have halted interviews or at least slowed the recruitment process down.

FANG or bust? Aim lower?

Amazon epmF77 OP Mar 6, 2020

I applied to numerous startups and non-tech companies in SF, Chicago, Austin, and NY. I either get a rejection email or get ignored.

Hey your journey looks depressing but just keep going. After you land a job you like, looking back all of this will be worth it!
