We exchange money for goods and services. This means our money is only worth as much as the goods and services it can demand. The magnitude of the sum does not have a strict correspondence to a fixed quantity or quality of goods and services. Money is not wealth.
I have no idea what you are trying to say. Are you rediscovering transactional economy starting from bartering all over again? Because i must tell you, you probably wont be a contender for Nobel prize in economics.
If your dollars can’t get you what you want then they’re useless. That’s all I’m trying to say here.
Only useless for that item; not really for other items.
Money is wealth, but the understood/ perceived value of that wealth can fluctuate over time.
Is a library card a book? I suppose both the currency and the goods/services have their respective valuations.
It's not a book, but having one allows you to borrow a book, so there is some value to it.
Existential crisis 🤔
What is wealth, then, OP?
Wealth is time with loved ones. Laughing with a friend. Sharing a nice meal. Providing for another in need. Being content. And comfortable. Knowing you will be “ok” going forward. Mostly though, being able to do what you want. The person you want to be. It can be the physical objects that lead to that … assets. It can be the social relationships. Probably there is more. What do you think? Money is none of these things.
Money may be none of those things, but a lack of money will prevent you from having/enjoying those things.
You say so much but convey so little. I'll offer you a "being so deep" pass and like your post if you Venmo me $1
Read a book. Harari has a nice one on the topic which is also very short.
Thank you for your suggestion. Harari has a few books. Which one do you suggest?
“Money” by Y Harari :)
Sure. If you took a different turn, it would lead you to: We exchange money for goods and services. In most of the situations money is the ONLY way to procure such goods and services. Many of these goods and services are requirements to survive in the current society. Hence money is vital for you to survive in civilization even if it’s not the wealth your monkey brain seeks. PS: also banana. 🍌
There are raw goods, intermediate goods and finished goods. You can work to produce any of these goods. Some are easier than others. Certainly some stuff can not be obtained. Perhaps that is oil. So yes you need some currency to trade for this. But that exception proves the rule.
Oh really. Walk me through the process of making a chicken sandwich for yourself from scratch. Grow wheat. Grind. Make bread (not counting water) Get sea water. Make salt. Get cow. Wait for it to give u milk. Make cheese. Farm chicken. Kill. Clean. Get breast. Now u ready to cook. How long did it take, for you to get finished good by yourself?
OP is romanticizing. They’re writing like someone who has enough money to devalue money.
I am poor relative to the TC of others
Right. But you are enormously wealthy compared to an avg person working just more than minimum wage.
Money is how work over time is stored.
