Hello. What are your thoughts on Quantum Computing (as a service)? I came across a report that said the market *could* be worth $26B by the end of the decade. I fail to see the kind of problems the technology can be used for. On the other hand, I see big tech rushing to invest. G, Microsoft, Amazon, IBM etc. And I also see US Govt being interested in the technology. I'm looking to decide if a career switch in QC technology is prudent. Thanks. (Edit: fixed typo) TC: 380k
Quantum Computing is big but it's no DogeCoin (QC is worthless)
Who doesn't want to be the first to crack SHA encryption?
It’ll end encryption as we know it. It’s another y2k moment where we need to rethink a lot of things.
Y2K was not a moment tho lol. It was a joke in hindsight
Every technology starts looking like a toy. Imagine what people thought of the internet in 1970 - the current state is unimaginable.
It's going to take a while. I've started reading up on it, and the level of effort required to create and sustain basic logic gates is still a lot. Its advancing rapidly though and in ten years will look even more different. Once it picks up pace, things will not be the same from a computing standpoint with QC bolstering our abilities to do real cool shit.. But life? That will still be as boring and stupid as ever.
Doesn’t it have to work first
It's useful for a very specific set of problems. It just turns out that solving those problems is worth tens of billions of dollars.
It's mostly hardware focus now. Software not so much. I'll guard against Ponzi-like startup or teams. QC is quite vague for VC and investors. Most CEOs and founders made bombastic and grandiose claims. I suspect it'll take another at least 10-15years to settle if QC is for real or just a mirage. Another thing is that there'll will be inevitable consolidations. IMO, major chip fabricators are likely the only ones going to be building QC hardware profitably because you need to scale qbits by the millions. Currently, qbits are programmed using circuits assembly language which is not a productive paradigm to say the least. QC is where AI was 20-30years ago
