Curious on how people working at Square think the company is doing and whether they enjoy working there? In particular, is there still a lot of potential for Square to innovate? Create new streams of revenue? Separately, how is leadership? Promotions? Culture? I only ask this as a few people I know there are saying it’s kind of a dying company and has messy leadership. Though I wanted to hear from other folk about their thoughts. TC: $134K
I've been at Square for ~1yr. It's lived up to the promise re:culture. Any half decent mgr here is focused on setting up ICs for promo and if you're bored you can transfer to another team/BU
I work on Cash App and would absolutely recommend it here. Lots of interesting work on our roadmap. Really happy with the culture here as well, especially since there's a surprising amount of transparency from leadership.
@bmvl73: Nice! Is there any difference between square and cashapp? What are some good/unique perks at Cashapp? Thanks!
I've only worked on the Cash side, so I can't really compare the two.
Are you asking about Square business unit only, or all of Block?
All of block. So far it looks pretty good
Leadership is definitely messy, but they do their best to listen and care about their employees. After our recent stock drop, I think core did a great job of looking out for us by giving the majority of us huge refreshers that brought us close to, back to, or even over our original offers. I personally feel much more motivated and positive after seeing that my employer is looking out for us in this way. The people I’ve worked with at SQ (even virtually) have been far nicer and more collaborative than other companies I’ve worked at.
"After our stock drop... huge refreshers" That's NOT true, I'm 2021 hire and comp cycle added 🥜 refresher to current 🥜 TC.
YMMV. From the comp thread, it sounds like high performing 2021 hires have generally been made whole. The comp increases were definitely not evenly distributed (e.g., my refresh was half my original grant, whereas some people had fairly small increases).
I enjoy working here. Lots of big bets and culture is top notch.
Compensation cycle and TC is a joke. Transparency is just a word. Leadership is mediocre.
Stay away from the bank / capital side. Lots of departures recently and very few new products shipped. Prolly a haircut coming soon
Why do you recommend staying away from the bank side? Currently, I am considering talking to a recruiter for that BU
Had a big shuffle at the executive level over the last 18-24 months. They’ll be fine but definitely lost a lot of folks who had been around for a while under the old leadership and cycled to other teams/companies when the new person came in. Tbh, probably a lot of growth opportunity coming in the banking org because of the spike in turnover.
I personally love it. We are innovative, have autonomy, and good WLB. Only thing bad was stock price fell, but in comp cycle, they gave most people impacted larger refreshers to make up for it.
It’s the best company I’ve worked for. Comp is good. Work is interesting. People are cool. WLB is solid. Career opportunities are there if you want them. People will always find stuff to nit pick and complain about, but I’m not going anywhere for a while.
Sounds like a dream company! How easy is it to transit to management for L6/7 engineers?
Apple 🍏 new payment is coming
This is a fair point. I think Shopify POS will struggle with this too. Though I guess Square would suffer more as it’s one of their major products.
Square was smart enough in expanding their product lines. Payment gateway + small business loans + line of credit + device sales still strong. On top they have cash app for investing and have crypto exposure as well.
