Thoughts on longevity of tech sales?

Sometimes I go on r/sales and see people saying there’s a bubble or that big tech sales OTEs are way inflated.

IMO, people have been making a lot of money in tech sales for a long time and I think pay will continue to go up. The only contingency I could see is the career growing in popularity and there being some issues at the entry level down the line.

Thoughts??

I'd assume they are wrong. Big money has always been in tech sales, sure the technology has changed but the jobs haven't.

Now it's all SAAS and cloud, previously it was networking hardware and storage. The big money isn't going away.

  • Selling enterprise SaaS like ERP, CRM, analytics, etc, is going to continue to be a big business. It’s subject to slowdowns in the economy like anything else, but it’s definitely not going away any time soon.

Depends on what you mean when you say "tech sales". Agree there's continued upside from enterprise/saas/cloud type selling. Less bullish on Ads sales...Ads growth at a place like google has been slowing for years (still growing but not at the same rate, I know I know). regulation + privacy concerns etc will continue to hit Ads. Additionally, automation and self serve tools for advertisers will limit the need for highly paid account executives who primarily wine/dine clients/agencies.

Longevity and pay is not a concern! However procurement is getting easier and automated so I’m not sure enterprises will want to interact with a sales rep for every purchase they make. Some sort of vendor consolidation will continue to happen! A lot of softwares will be procured the same way like we purchase apps from the IOS AppStore!

  • Technology is what drives literally all aspects of the economy, and absolutely required in every industry. So I don’t think tech is a “fad” or anything like that.. however I have noticed soooo mannny start ups, just gotta make sure you’re in the right part of tech. For example anything Infra or AI.. things that companies prioritize and need.
