Tier 2 companies, how hard is to get there?

Feb 13, 2021 19 Comments

Everyone is only talking about top league and how to get there and how bar is high.

But what about Tier 2 companies? How hard is to get there? What are the expectations? How are the interviews?

I’m referring to Cisco, VMware, etc. (you named it) #tech

I think it's the same process, just much less competition. Hard to quantify. Why not just practice hard and shoot for tier 1?

Oh come on man, don’t sell yourself short. You probably don’t realize your true potential. You don’t need to be “smart” necessarily to pass G or F interviews less to do actual work there. It is a set of skills which can be acquired. Passing interview is a mix of perseverance and luck. If you truly want to work there - make it your goal and work towards it. But if you don’t really care, that’s fine too but it doesn’t make you less “smart”. Probably the opposite :)

You don't really think FAANG engineers are some God like engineers?

Just prep, build your skills and do your best that's how the majority of the folks got here.

Real engineering gods are Linus Torvalds, james gosling, etc . Don't sell yourself short, we're nothing special. There are pockets of strong teams in these places but its mostly mundane

I have been very disappointed with the quality of inbound applicants at various roles in dell. I got better applicants when I worked for a startup that was about to run out of funding and offering below market salaries. Your success will greatly improve if you build a connection internal to the company that can advocate for you.
