Time zone problems working in nyc

Nov 29, 2021 10 Comments

Planning to move to nyc for my new job. Have an option of choosing nyc over bay/Seattle and leaning heavily due to social opportunities. Looking for advice on how to manage time zone difference since majority of my team is on the west coast. Would love to hear from people who are in the same boat.

I love being east coast with west coast team. If I wake up at 9am, I ping the slack good morning so people know I was up early. But if I wake up late, i can start work up to 3 hrs later and just “work west coast hours”. Sometimes I ping my slack saying today I’m going to work PT hours and done. Win for flexibility.

I hated it. I fucking hated it. I quit that job after 3 months. Manager had zero empathy and was in fact a workaholic. She had zero chill. We were both in the east coast for ducks sake. She expected the team to work from 10am to 7pm. Internal stakeholders were also shit. Zero sense of time. Do you like 9pm meetings because that's how you get 9pm meetings.

  • IMO, east coast to west coast difference is not bad at all. I work west coast time but majority of folks I work with are on East or Central time. I start early—around 7:30am which is 9:30/10:30 for them. But I’m offline by 4:00 every day. Honestly the hardest thing is lunch bc my team will forget and schedule meetings from 10:30-2:00 my time never giving me a lunch, so I had to start blocking my time for lunch and now I’m selective about attending meetings if I’m blocked. Simply decide what works for you and propose it to your boss and come up with a plan. Would 10-6 NYC time work? That will be 7-3 your team’s time, which seems like more than enough overlap.

If you work at a company that respects work life boundaries, you’ll probably be able to work 10:30 to 6:30 or maybe even 9:30 to 5:30 most days, and occasionally do a late meeting a few times a quarter. It’s actually really nice since you get mornings to do your work in peace.

I've done this kind of situation before. I think it boils down to how much coordination your work requires. For me, I had to peg my schedule to Pacific for the first few weeks as I learned the ropes of my job. Eventually, I could just start at fairly reasonable times (8 or 9 AM) without really having a problem. This is as an individual contributor, though. I can see this becoming a lot more problematic if you're in some kind of management role or need to coordinate with a bunch of folks/have meetings all the time. Working until 8pm or later because your colleagues work until 5pm or later might SUCK.
