Tips and tricks to help out fellow job seekers

Nov 18, 2021 7 Comments

I wanted to start a thread for non-obvious things that play a key role in landing a job offer (not just SWE roles). I know this could mean more competition BUT I believe there are plenty of jobs for each one of us and it’s not a zero sum game. I am not sure if there is a duplicate thread but I just figured I can contribute my 2 cents and help out another person. Hoping others would do the same.

I think the most relevant topic should have been “Job search” but I don’t see that under the dropdown (pretty counter intuitive) but I’ve posted this under job openings which is close enough.

  • I think something that is more important than most people realize is the "culture fit" aka if the people interviewing you like you personally. I've noticed that the companies who extended me an offer were always the interviewers who I made laugh, etc. I didn't do any better technically, they just liked me personally.

  • I’ll start: if you’re looking to switch careers, industries etc, 1. the first thing to do is to do your own SWOT analysis to see what are your individual strengths/weaknesses etc. 2. Then you have to understand what are your priorities? (More TC, WLB, growth, remote, visa, stability/rest & best) find companies that support what you are looking for. Then go through roles and gain understanding of what is the actual requirement of the role. JDs are incredibly vague, so if you happen to interview ask questions that will help you understand what day to day looks like for this role. This will help you align whether they are what you’re looking for. 3. Please get your resume reviewed by an expert - if you’re not getting interview calls you can likely benefit from an expert review. 4. Practice to get over anxiety. It is extremely important to be in a calm/confident mindset before interviewing. Mindset sets the tone of the interview. These are the general “vibes” you give off. 5. I think Knowing your domain/core skills well only comes after all this is met. Obviously make sure to practice leetcode, coding, system design, know why a question is being asked, what are some FAQs etc.

Also, dont be discouraged by rejections from other companies. Job searching is very competitive and sometimes you have to have a luck to land the job you want. Also agree on above comments. Do the research and have the mindset that you want to get to know them and the company you interviewing with and try to influence positively. And also negotiate! Your experience and skills value way higher than what they initially offer
