So apparently I am supposed to whiteboard a candidate with 20 something years of experience. I never interviewed anyone before and the rest of the team does not have any experience with whiteboarding either since we were doing take-homes until now. I am thinking one design, one string manipulation and one search question, 2 meds and 1 hard. Thoughts? Also what should I pay attention to in general? How do I prepare myself?
1. Is this person going to be in a hands on role? If not asking a string manipulation question makes no sense to me. If it’s hands on role then focus on 2 mediums I feel. 2. Focus more on system design. 2 rounds on that. Round 1 - ask one of the popular scalability questions out there. Round 2 - ask about a system design challenge you/your current team faced 3. Focus rest of the rounds on behavior and leadership skills - I like how stripe asks the candidates to mediate a tech discussion. - how to build great team, motivate people, make hard decisions etc
OP... do you think you can do 2 mediums and 1 hard in 45 mins on a whiteboard??? Jeeez.... that’s the issue in Silicon Valley... blind testing the blind
No but according to his resume and reference he can. In 2 hours with a break that is
20 yrs of experience and assuming a good TC, you should be looking to hire a great leader and not a leetcode grinder
20 years of consultancy shop experience at that though
Lol no one asks hard r u dumb OP?

We're doing 2 hours with a brief lunch break, he will live
Ahh that makes sense then. Your method seems more reasonable then. What are your requirements for this position?
