Tips for leaving your first job out of college

I was fortunate to land this job no less than 2 months after graduating with a non tech degree. I have grown tremendously here. But like every startup turned mature company, there’s issues. On one hand I want to stay because this is home, I have faith in the brand and am very passionate about the company. On the other, that same compassion has lead to heartache. I have a list of things the next company must have: 1. A remote Friendly Policy 2. 401k & matching 3. Paid benefits (family included) 4. Company values must align with my own values 5. Employees mostly have a positive attitude about the culture. 6. some sort of WLB What are some other things I might be missing? TC 122k SWE

It’s a job not a marriage.

But I’ve invested time. Close to 7 years. I would rather leave this for a better situation not something that’s worse.

You have invested time and you were paid for that time. If you’ve been at your first company since college for 7 years you’ll most definitely get a bump elsewhere. It also looks kinda weird to only get experience at one company.

Curious what makes you very passionate about mailchimp? Truly trying to learn/understand, not trying to pass any kind of judgement.

I’ve been there since the early days when there were less than 300 employees. I’ve seen features grow, I’ve seen the company grow. There are people here that I’ve built meaningful relationships with. I helped to shape the culture that the company has today. There are issues that I care about being changed with people and the software. Really it’s the culture and the people that I work with that keep me here and happy to come in everyday. But I do often feel like I’m a big fish in a small pond.
